لنا صديقٌ ماردٌ

لنا صديقٌ ماردٌ

يُكثرُ خَنْقَ الدّيكَهْ

يُكثرُ خَنْقَ الدّيكَهْ

We have a rebellious friend

We have a defiant friend

who often strangles roosters.

Who often strangles the rooster

قلت أهلاً فقد

قلت أهلاً فقد

لحاك أهل المملكهْ

لحاك أهل المملكهْ

I said, "Welcome! For

I said hello for he

the people of the kingdom have reviled you."

Met the people of the kingdom

فقال دعني إنني

خرقتُ تلك الشَّبكهْ

وكنت ممَّنْ تركهْ

and withdrawn from the party of right guidance;

And parted from the party of guidance

I was among those who abandoned it.

And was of those who left it

هل هو إلا قولهم

هل هو إلا قولهم

واهاً له ما أنيكهْ

واهاً له ما أنيكهْ

Is it anything but their saying,

Is it not just their saying

'Bravo for him—how much he fucks!'?

Oh what a shame

والقول ما أنيكَهُ

والقول ما أنيكَهُ

أحسنُ من ما أنوكهْ

أحسنُ من ما أنوكهْ

And saying, 'How much he fucks!'

And the saying what a shame

is better than, 'How foolish he is!'

Is better than what a pity

فلا تلمني يا أخي

فلا تلمني يا أخي

بل ادعُ لي بالبركهْ

بل ادعُ لي بالبركهْ

So do not blame me, my brother;

rather, pray for me to be blessed."
