Today you cut the cord that bound you to Lamis,

despite the lingering love within your heart.

As though she had faced you with Amr's nose,

and a head as grizzled as his robe.

Whenever he inhales two elephants effortlessly,

there is no sensation there, nor the faintest sound.

And aged wine complains of harm whenever

he breathes into goblets of aged wine.

Ruin upon Amr as a drinking companion,

when drinking companions are praised—and as a companion too!

I heard of Amr the jinn long ago,

but never saw him among humankind.

So God revealed him to us in Amr,

Father of the Trunk, with his commanding nose.

    وقد تجد النفيسَ على خسيس

    A precious nose among noses, on a base man;

and you may indeed find the precious upon the base.

When your eyes are confronted with Amr,

you recall the tale of Tasm or Jadis:

one of those forms abandoned long ago,

and one of the giants' worn-out designs.

An infiltrator for the Jews among the Christians,

to disgrace them—cursed be such an infiltrator!

He turns deaf to admonitions and amusements,

but talk of the phallus delights him.

Come, son of the vizier—come, uproot him,

and do not plant him—cursed be such a sapling!

A woman asked, 'Do you fear Amr's might,

though, as we have known you, you are a lion of the thicket?'

    I replied, 'I fear him—and you spoke truly: I

am a mighty lion, ever over prey.

But what lion is a match for an elephant?

An elephant is fearsome enough as an adversary!'

I marveled at my standing at Amr's door,

though he was never a precious treasure.

But I lost nothing, and that is because I

was taught a lifelong lesson by his baseness.

It is good sense we bought for a purse,

and who would not buy good sense for a purse?

O Amr, your superiority among the Christians

is like Wednesday's superiority over Thursday.

So do not be stingy with your honor when lampooned,

for what you wear of it is a worn, threadbare garment.

Slander had already worked on you before me,

as fire works on dry firewood.
