ويلقانيَand encounter me الأعداءُthe enemies كالحنظلlike colocynth الغضّfresh
To my friends I go down as easily as their drink,
I make excuses for my boon companions and accept their drink
but my enemies find me like fresh colocynth.
While my enemies attack me like angry wasps

Were it not for a young man's proud refusal and bitterness,
Were it not for pride in a young man and bitterness
he would overlook things that sting the eyes of him who overlooks them.
I would ignore things that cause annoyance

ولاnor البغيُwrongdoing منof شأنيmy way فأسخطso that I would resent ماwhat يُرضيpleases
No weakness in me makes me accept what angers me,
I have no weakness to accept what displeases me
nor is wrongdoing my way, that I should resent what pleases.
Nor injustice in my nature to be angry at what gives pleasure

I have a deliberation that lets no opportunity slip;
I have patience that does not miss an opportunity
it moves at a measured pace, yet is like a gallop.
It has a method that keeps to a steady pace

وأُبقيand I spare ولوthough if أمكنْتةI gave him an opening لرمىhe would surely shoot at عرضيmy honor
A target comes within my reach, yet I hold back,
My ability at archery allows me to hit the target
and spare him, though he would shoot at my honor if I gave him an opening.
And yet I restrain myself, though able to shoot straight
أكفI restrain يديmy hand حِلماًout of forbearance وفضلَand abundant تكرمٍmagnanimity
وإنيand I indeed لرحبam ample in الذرعreach; capacity بالبسطin extending والقبضand withdrawing
I restrain my hand out of forbearance and abundant magnanimity,
I hold back my hand out of forbearance and nobility
and my reach is ample, whether I extend my hand or draw it back.
Though my reach is wide whether stretched out or pulled in

I am indeed a victorious lion in battle,
In battle I am a lion, aided and victorious
lent the means of mauling, with claw and bite.
Masterful in seizing triumph and tearing apart the prey

Whenever I brandish the spear on a day of battle
When I brandish my spear on an ominous day
against a host, that host is the first to scatter.
Against a horde, they are the first to scatter in defeat

Hosts dwindle in my eyes amid battle,
I think little of crowds when fury rises
even if they come in full force—great stones and small pebbles alike.
Even if they attack with bites and scratches

The harm I deal rival champions when I meet them
My peers have done me no harm when we meet
is no light blow; nor is my thrust there a shallow prick.
With no stabbing or striking me there with malice

ولاnor حينَwhen تنقضُّplunge down النجومُthe stars بمنقضّfalling
The star of my judgment never sets amid calamities,
My viewpoint in trials does not fail or wane
nor falls when the stars come falling down.
Even when the stars swiftly disappear at night's onset

If the hidden depths of a dire predicament conceal
When a clever plan hides its secret
an ambush of dreaded harm, trust my scouting it out.
Laying an ambush of feared evil, I surrender to it

Secrets reveal themselves to me in their hiding places
their twitching and throbbing movements,
Of their movements, both open and concealed

With perception like seeing, not divided
and unscattered when conjectures scatter.
Nor when conjectures are tossed aside and rejected

My glance breaks open the seals of hidden thoughts,
The seals of mysteries open for me
but the seal of my own secrets is far from being broken.
While the seal of my secrets remains untouched

I am truly patient under the rightful claim that befalls me,
I have patience with truth even when it worries me
even if enduring it wears my flesh away.
Were there deficiency in my patience, it would show

وأنand that ليسit is not عنfrom طولthe height of الجُسومbodies ولاnor العَرضbreadth
knowing that glory makes its people lean,
I know glory jokes with its people
and that it comes not from bodies' height or breadth.
That it is not about height or width

My reprovers leave to one another the rebuke of a noble man
My critic relies on blaming the glorious
who regards reproaches for generosity as encouragement.
Seeing the flaw of criticism as foolishness

When dispositions grow narrow, my own nature opens
When manners narrow, my nature expands
into a spaciousness such as one like me attains.
To a capacity equal to it, it leads

I am ever saddling riding-camels despite weariness,
I am one who roams far on his mount
little concerned with wearing out what I wear out.
Caring little for the tiring of what I spur

I sell the pleasure of sleep for the hardship of night travel,
I sell distaste of travel for joy of arrival
when the sluggard's eye has drunk its fill of shut-eye.
When my thirsty eye is sated from being shut

That is not because I am ignorant of comfort,
It is not that I am ignorant of comfort
but I have seen ease cling to lowliness.
But I have seen lowness stick to lowness

وهلand is there بعدهbeyond it شيءٌanything أشدُّI tighten لهfor it غَرضِيmy saddle-girth
I tighten my saddle to attain glory, girded for action;
I strive to attain glory, exerting myself
is there anything beyond it for which I would tighten my girth?
After that, is there anything my goal demands?

If I wished, I could let my eyelids drink their fill of sleep,
If I wished, I could give rest to tired eyes
and lean my sides against a soft, tender body.
And incline my sides to a dormant body

I am the gaunt mount of noble deeds, their worn-out beast,
Yet I am the knotting and unknotting of favors
though I do not complain of weariness at being worn down.
Though I do not complain of the tedium of untying

I have an aspiration that holds in its thirst until it is quenched,
My ambition carries thirst to the watering place
disdaining beast-fouled water and scant, shallow pools.
Keen to take the paths of water and distant meadows

When men strive toward eminence but fall short,
When a people rise up and fall short
I am fit to complete my ascent to it.
I have the right that my effort completes it

I stretch toward the highest distinction a hand of ample reach,
I extend a hand of wide palm and generous eye
and a noble man's eye that is never told, 'Lower your gaze.'
That cannot be told, "Lower your gaze!"
