A noble whose virtues facilitated his pardons
yet he makes those lofty achievements rugged ground.

And to a false witness for the ingrate Ibn Bulbul,
A false witness for the ungrateful son of a nightingale
I said: You have emboldened the most insolent of fat she-camels.
So I said to him, you have transgressed, the most transgressing of the dazzlers

I played the fool, compelled to join that fool.
To share with the forced against my will

by hurricanes of scouring winds.

the reward of a man fucked in his arse, not one doing the fucking.
When I was worthy of the defiant, ruling sword

I am no eater of foul flesh,
If my hands firmly grasp the handhold of Qasim
yet he shall certainly have from me a chewer's mouthful.
I will not perish at the turning of time

If my hand grips Qasim's handle firmly,
We saw every pardon and attainment as deficient
I shall not perish despite time's reversals.
We heard their two mentioned in proverbs

He showed us with our own eyes every unasked bounty and gift
Qasim saved me from the stumbling of fate
whose celebrated examples we had heard of among the Barmakids.

Qasim rescued me from time's stumbling blow
So I came to prosper, fruitful in days
with whatever I wished of his unremitting kindness.
And I came to glory, strong in life

So I awoke in a fruit-bearing grove of livelihood,
A noble whose grants preoccupied him from asking
and reached evening in a life thorn-armored with might.
Swift grants for those nearing requests

For the gladdened faces are no criterion
whose gifts outrun even the eager, hasty petitioner.
Nor the veiled innermost thoughts any interpreter

He does not wear out the skin of faces,
A noble I will not call youthful for novelty
nor rend the veils of hidden matters.
But for those striking qualities, defender

He sways eagerly to bestow gifts upon every petitioner;
He has a gathering that does not cease to be headed
the diversions of one like him are like sacred rites.
With the best of ostrich eggs amidst the sand grouse
لهhe has مَجْلِسٌa gathering ماnot إنindeed يزالceases مُصدَّراًadorned at its head
بأحسنَwith fairer ones منthan بَيْضthe eggs of النعامostriches الترائكleft behind
He has a gathering whose foremost seats are always filled
Therein singers sing to us, pleasing him
with beauties lovelier than ostrich eggs left behind.
With verses of praise, not incompatible
يُغنّينَهُthey sing to him فيهin it بماwhat سيَّرتcirculated لهfor him
لُهاهُhis largesse منof الأمداحِpanegyrics غيرِfree of الأوافكِfalsehoods
There they sing to him the verses spread on his behalf
Never have the beautiful praised a benefactor
by his largesse: panegyrics that tell no lies.
With praise like influential, flowing praise
ولمand never يتغنَّsang المحسناتُaccomplished women لمحسنٍfor a benefactor
بمثلِthe like of مديحٍpraise ذامِلٍtrotting فيهabout him راتكِswift-stepping
Never have accomplished women sung for a benefactor
We witnessed him one day, delightful, covered
such praise, trotting and racing in his name.
Setting up joys for us atop the platforms
شهدْناwe witnessed لهfor him يوماًa day أغرَّwhite-blazed محجَّلاًwhite-stockinged
أقامhe set لناfor us اللذاتِpleasures فوقabove السنابكhooves
We witnessed for him a day white-blazed and white-stockinged;
For Umm Ali a thrush therein, intimate
he set our pleasures upon hooves.
Of the eye like an eye, lined with kohl
لأمِّfor the mother of عليٍّAli رَبْرَبٌa herd of gazelles فيهin it آنِسٌtame

منof العِينwide-eyed women مثلِlike العينwild cows حُفَّتْencircled بعانِكby heaped sand
Umm Ali had there a tame herd of gazelles,
Of the clear complexion, lips as if
of wide-eyed beauties, like wild cows ringed by heaped sand,
Speaking with gazelle mouths, shying
منof الوُضَّحfair-skinned women اللُّعْسdusky الشّفاهthe lips كأنماas though

fair-skinned, with dusky lips, as though
They raise voices gently and sometimes
they spoke with the mouths of arak-browsing gazelles.
Murmur subtly, not the whisper of conspirators
يُرفّعْنَthey raise أصواتاًvoices لِداناًsupple وتارةًand sometimes

يُنَمنمنَthey embroider وشْياًbrocade غيرَunlike وشيthe brocade of الحوائكweavers
They raise supple voices, and at times
They tilted for us when they lined up before us
embroider a brocade unlike the weavers' work.
With sending away guests of black sorrows
كفلْنَthey pledged لناto us لمَّاwhen اصطفَفْنَthey lined up حيالناbefore us
بترحيلto send away أضيافِthe guests of الهُمومِworries السّوادكlingering
When they lined up before us, they pledged
She does but send wondrous matters to us
to send away the lingering guests of care.
Wondrous matters raining upon every vessel and devotee
فماand not برحتْceased تُهديoffering إليناto us عجائبٌAja'ib
عجائبَmarvels تُصبيenchant كلَّevery صابٍlover وناسكand ascetic
Aja'ib never ceased to offer us
A Turkish girl who shoots arrows
marvels that enchanted every lover and ascetic:
Hitting the target in symmetry, not in battle
فتاةٌa girl منfrom الأتراكِthe Turks ترميshoots بأسهُمٍwith arrows
يُصِبْنَthey strike الحَشاthe innermost heart فيin السّلمpeace لاnot فيin المعاركbattles
a girl of the Turks, shooting arrows
As if the melody of singers lent her
that strike the heart in peace, not in battles.
Its spirit and rhyme of weeping laughers
كأنَّas though زميرَthe piping of القاصياتِdistant creatures أعارَهاlent her

As though the piping of far-off creatures had lent her
A garden, a garden delighting our eyes
its pathos and the cooing of the weeping, laughing ones.
With its lanterns therein laughing

And Bustan is a garden that delights our eyes
Singing and a delicate adorned face both
with the laughing blossoms it contains.
Stirring the emotions of the composed

يهيلانِmake crumble جُولَيْboth walls of ذيone possessing الحِجىreason المتماسكself-controlled
Singing and a face, both enchanting,
We shaded a monument there our hearts doubt
crumble both walls of the steadfast man's reason.
With that charming spirit, not with the stars
ظللناwe remained لهاfor her نَصْباًa target تشكُّshe pierces قلُوبناour hearts
بذاكwith that الشجاpathos الفتَّانِbewitching لاnot بالنيازكwith short spears
We remained her target; she pierced our hearts
No blamer can disparage her stature
with that bewitching pathos, not with short spears.
Nor the transgressor intend a sounder path

Nor does Jullanar fall short in her course,
A gentle slender one leaning her lute
or overstep the middle course of the best-guided paths.
Against a star on the field of the chest's sky
لطيفةُdelicate قدّthe shape of الثديthe breast تُسندshe rests عودَهاher lute
إلىagainst ناجمٍa rising bud فيin ساحةِthe expanse of الصدرthe chest فالكrounded
Her breasts are delicately shaped; she rests her lute
Her composure calmed regarding the tall ones
against a rounded bud rising on the plain of her chest.
And reared regarding the short lively ones

وأربىand rose above علىover قدّthe stature of القصارِshort women الحواتكclose-stepping
Her stature falls below that of tall women,
A dancer with drum and cymbals, alluring
and rises above that of short, close-stepping women.
Possessing the melody of Maghnatis and provocation of youth
ورقاصةٍand a dancing girl بالطبلِwith the drum والصنجِand cymbals كاعبٌbudding-breasted

And a budding-breasted dancer, with drum and cymbals,
Opportunity was afforded her body: grants of grants
has an effeminate man's coquetry and a ruthless assailant's menace.
And if it touched her waist: melting of melting
أُتيحَwas granted لهاto her فيin جسمهاher body رفدُthe bounty of رافدٍa benefactor
وإنalthough نالهاafflicted her فيin خصرهاher waist نَهْكthe wasting of ناهكa waster
Her body was granted a benefactor's bounty,
When she stood up in the rows her teeth shone baring
though her waist was afflicted by a waster's wasting.
A cast ingot in the field of the mouth's mold

When she stands in gauzy robes, she is lit
The name of fiddler goes beyond the name of flirt
by her own radiance, and they reveal a caster's ingot.
A name designated by you with your perspectives
تخطَّىpassed beyond اسمَthe name of عَيَّارٍAyyar إلىto اسمِthe name of مؤاجَرٍMu'ajar
مُسمٍّa namer لهاfor her ماwhatever شئتَyou wished منof مُتفاتِكa daring person
Past the name Ayyar to the name Mu'ajar stepped
Those names and their bearers were all ransomed
her namer, as daring as you could wish.
The adornment of God's land after necklaces

زيانبُZaynabs أرضِthe earth of اللَّهِGod بعدafter العواتكthe Atikas
May those names—rather, their bearers—be ransomed by
Faces like days of joy resembling for us
the Zaynabs of God's earth, after its Atikas.
Wild cows like the seizing nights
وجوهٌfaces كأيامِlike the days of السُّعودِgood fortune تشبُّهاkindle them

Faces like days of good fortune are set aglow
Captives to whom our minds' wits were taken captive
for us by forelocks like pitch-dark nights.
Rulers who ruled the might of kingdoms

مماليكslave women مُلّكْنwere granted اقتدارَthe dominion of الممالكkingdoms
Captives to whom the capture of our minds belongs,
Pleasures between manifestation and withdrawal to the bosom
slave women endowed with the dominion of kingdoms.
And between constriction of the ascetics

Poised between abandon to lewdness
Sweethearts who shed blood yet you see
and the restraint of humble, devout women.
No care from them for pouring tears

Mistresses who spill blood; you will not see
When they decide on parting, we are all
in them any concern for flowing tears.
Sorrowful for those circling suns

أسِيٌّgrieving علىfor تلكthose الشموسsuns الدوالكsetting
When they resolve upon departure, all of us are
Qasim, you leave nothing yet take nothing
grieving for those setting suns.
You refuse and take nothing, yet leave nothing
أقاسمُO Qasim ماwhatever تتركْyou leave فلستَthen you are not بآخذٍtaking
أبَيْتَyou refuse وماand whatever تأخذْyou take فلستَthen you are not بتاركleaving
O Qasim, whatever you leave, you will not take;
So leave me not, oh noble, exposed
you refuse to yield, and whatever you take, you will not leave.
To a fate that leaves the noble not leaving
فلاso do not تتركنّيleave me أيُّهاO الحرُّnoble freeborn man عُرضةًexposed

So do not leave me, noble man, exposed
to time, which has ceased to leave the noble alone.
