    Time delights in setting the motionless moving,

    and stirring a lurking creature among the wild beasts.

    Such are loved ones: whoever remains, they depart

    from him; every one of them bids a departing traveler farewell.

    ولعل رشداً إن قَضيتَ مُدائنا

    Time has become your creditor in their persons;

    perhaps wisdom lies in repaying a creditor.

    I see that the nights have broken no covenants

    in what they have done, nor invaded places of safety.

    They removed your beloved from transient dwellings

    that had been dwellings for other people.

    Hold fast to modesty, Abu al-Husayn: there was

    no extraordinary thing you had not imagined would happen.

    What you had been certain

    would happen has happened; grieve with certainty, not weakness.

    Ease the heart-rending losses upon yourself, and do not

    disregard advice from a sincere friend.

    فاشدُد إزاركَ لا يكنَّ فواتِنا

    Misfortunes have indeed become grievous blows;

    so tighten your waistband: let them not lead you astray.

    Do not reject whatever calamities have come

    as though you had been safe from them.

    Reject it as a man who knows death would reject it,

    and sees souls as hostages pledged to die.

    I would reproach the nights for bringing

    what they brought, had they not already been suspect.

    Were you ignorant of calamities before this,

    or did you imagine they guaranteed what you love?

    Rather, you had reflected on what you have now met

    until it was as though you had witnessed it there.

    Why, then, do you recoil with a wild creature's recoil,

    and count your time as treacherously destroying you?

    No time betrays when it announces its vicissitudes,

    never ceasing to send warnings through its lessons.

    فلتَزجُرنَّ أشائماً وأَيامنا

    Subdue your heart, companion of life, before its malady;

    so read both ill and good omens.

    Survival afflicts well-being, whether swiftly—

    may you always be granted it—or when weary.

    Whoever lives, Time bereaves him of his friend

    and gives him stagnant, muddy water after the clear.

    بيناهُ عذبٌ إذ تحوّلَ آسِنا

    So it is with life's draught: it changes;

    just as it is sweet, it turns stale.

    As long as misfortunes pass a man's own life by,

    he meets Time both warring and making truce.

    Time revolved with its night and day

    and turned death's millstones, grinding.

    واعجبْ لمن أضحى إليها راكنا

    Consider the world, and do not marvel at it;

    marvel instead at whoever comes to trust it.

    Your friend Abu al-Abbas fulfilled his allotted span,

    and you made your streaming tears your pledged duty.

    You wished to be the first to follow him,

    or to be joined to him as his companion.

    But God refused that; do not desire

    what He has not desired, and accept consolation as a friend.

    Do not imprison sorrow within you: it

    continually torments its jailer while imprisoned.

    Be patient as the Sovereign commanded; indeed,

    the debtor finds the right way when he obeys the creditor.

    May God grant you eternity as a neighbor

    to your brother in His gardens, sharing his dwelling,

    after you have lived a life of enjoyment,

    not like one escorted aloft among departing caravans.

    Your friend did not die on the day he visited his grave,

    but on the day he visited midwives and nurses.

    Rather, from the time he was deposited by his father and mother

    in his two repositories: be mindful of that.

    نطقَ البيانُ مُكاتباً ومُلاسِنا

    Indeed, he may die before those above the soil;

    eloquence declared it in writing and spoken exchange.

    Your friend has always been dead, and to a dead man

    among the dead related by marriage and kinship through marriage.

    All creatures died when their Lord announced their death,

    indeed, when an eye first saw a companion departing.

    Is it, then, mere precedence and delay that draw

    streams of pouring tears from your eyes?

    His extinction drove the friend toward the horses,

    to be buried for him or to be his burier.

    والدهرُ أخطفُ ما تراه مُحاجنا

    Perhaps both are snatched away in a single snatching;

    Time snatches more swiftly than any hooked staffs you see.

    Nor did I polish your heart's surfaces with admonition

    because I saw an encrusting tarnish upon them.

    It is simply the reminder a man offers

    his brother when he sees his grief abiding.

    Though I have marshaled consolations for you, they concern a man

    for whom I truly grieve, not merely feign grief.

    Though I have urged you outwardly to fortitude,

    inwardly I have filled with sorrow for him.

    You have stirred a grieving sorrow in me, by your life!

    you shall hear of every runner standing still.

    وقُصارُ ذي الطيران يُلقى واكنا

    The noble bird folded its wing upon its perch;

    the end of every flying creature is to be found perched.

    فإذا قضى أَرَبَيْهِ أمسى عاطِنا

    The living creature grazes, then runs awhile;

    when it has satisfied both needs, it rests by the watering place.

    after attaining the heights while bowing low.

    مات الذي كان النصير مُعالِنا

    He has died who was the counselor in private;

    he has died who was the supporter in public.

    from shaking sharp swords and supple spears.

    He has died who mended the breach, too exalted

    to be found striking or thrusting.

    death destroyed you with malice.

    only a grappler with adversity, matching its strength.

    wealth, you filled treasury after treasury.

    and bright swords, yet always concealed.

    moving all things while remaining still.

    who, if he wishes, can muster quivers for shooting.

    who, if he wishes, can prepare places for thrusting.

    and their women, leaving them to nurse their children.

    Had they twisted away, you would have struck them with stratagems

    more hidden in their lurking places than an imprisoned death.

    How many a lion's nails you clipped,

    as one clips without effacing its paws!

    How many a mighty back went away after you had burdened it,

    as one burdens without bloodying its vertebrae!

    ولربما خنعَ العَدوَّ مُضاغِنا

    It became sound of heart, harboring no rancor;

    often an enemy submits while harboring rancor.

    وملكتَ أفئدةَ الرجالِ مُلاينا

    The warrior mastered necks through severity;

    You treated the ailments of affairs well, dealing sternly

    with the sword so as to govern affairs graciously.

    You came to count hearts as friends,

    while others count hearts as enemies.

    Sounder for a ruler than owning necks

    is owning hearts by restoring them to safety.

    May kings rejoice that you granted them

    a rule of safety, adorning rather than disgracing.

    Rejoice in the kings' approval: you were never

    sleepy or pretending sleep while guarding them.

    You always watched over them with an eye of sincere counsel

    and spent the night in companionship with lengthy thought:

    متحدراً مُتياسراً متيامنا

    advancing, retreating, ascending,

    descending, moving left, moving right;

    غُمْراً تخالُ الليثَ ظبياً شادنا

    so daring that an ignorant man would think you

    an inexperienced fool who mistakes a lion for a young gazelle;

    so cautious that an observer would imagine you

    a deeply cowardly man, or one feigning cowardice.

    والحزمُ تعليةُ الدروعِ جواشنا

    Daring is casting off all armor;

    prudence is raising armor into breastplates.

    Both were in you, and only

    through both did you outstrip the frontrunners in the race.

    old deeds like yours toward kings as accustomed ways.

    This is for that, Abu al-Husayn; beyond it comes

    letting your praise run its deeply inward course.

    To someone asking me about you, I said: Our souls

    would ransom what is beautiful, outwardly and inwardly.

    You have asked about a man who accepts loss for his faith,

    since in his faith he is never regarded as losing.

    Long a monopolizer of praise, yet giving others preference

    in praise—ever lean, yet full-bodied.

    One beside whom the morals of these people

    seem crossbred, while his never lack purebred stock.

    You meet him approachable through familiar kindness,

    yet see him set apart by his far-reaching attainment.

    I found him discerning, noble, and weighty,

    when we can hardly find a noble man of any weight.

    We test him and praise his ascetic forbearance

    always, yet reproach his profligate generosity.

    When we do not know an undertaking's consequences,

    we keep asking him for prophetic judgment.

    He heard the appeal when others feigned deafness,

    and understood the praise, being skilled and discerning.

    He carefully preserved the praise I offered

    out of nobility, recording it in volumes with him.

    He wished to make his attentive regard for it known to me,

    so varied his approach, questioning and discerning.

    He attends to its meanings and utters its words,

    perceptive in all of it, not erring in speech.

    It is good fortune to call someone who hears

    when you appeal, and to praise someone who understands.

    ومتى تُلاقي مادحاً لا مائنا

    I have not praised you while lying in my praise;

    when do you meet a praiser who does not lie?

    My praise has become an adornment for people,

    and through your bounty I have become an adornment for it.

    Take pride in not disputing any boast,

    O man noble in his inborn traits.

    You are the most silent when a boaster boasts,

    and most eloquent in virtues when you are silent.

    The freeborn man is always more tongue-tied when another boasts,

    yet more present in testimony and proofs.

    I have spoken at length about you; that is what you required of me

    through gifts of yours that were no curses.

    How strange: I lowered the well-rope far for you, yet did not find

    your bounty deep down, but a flowing, springing source.

    I imagine you dislike my lengthy speech

    only because you hate to be the one who gains unfairly.

    I have not labored hard—how could that be, when I only

    praise with what supplies enduring sufficiency?

    فتزيلها حتى حسبتُك ضامنا

    I have always sought your help against every calamity;

    you remove it, until I think you its guarantor.

    واذكر أأعدِلُ ما فعلتَ مُوازنا

    Consider whether my repayment reaches what you have given;

    reflect whether my counterweight equals what you have done.

    فتنيلها حتى حسبتُك خازنا

    I stretch my hand toward every desired prize;

    you grant it, until I think you its keeper.

    Show me riches measured against praise; who regards

    hoof-pads as equal to a hump taken from the roots?

    ورأَيْتَ بي شَعْثاً فكنتَ الداهنا

    You found it rough and grimy, and were its polish;

    you saw dishevelment in me, and were the anointer.

    I asked people, and their gifts were poor,

    though they saw my time scraping away at my bones.

    وأَضفْتَني حتى أضفتُ ضيافنا

    All creation refused to host me;

    you hosted me until I myself could host guests.

    Whenever they offered an excuse or withheld hospitality,

    I found you supplying me with dates and milk.

    جَعلت يداك الجود فيها سادِنا

    You are the one whose house becomes a Kaaba each morning;

    your hands made generosity its guardian.

    The springtime of your bounty embraced all humankind,

    until the lean caught up with the well-fed.

    You found the banners of praise of little worth

    and made them precious through your kindnesses.

    You found our souls squandered over them

    and restored our souls to being treasured through them.

    Through bounty you revived the fortunes of peoples

    and harvested from it embryos and gardens.

    You gave until, among wives, there slept

    a chilled man for whom you had spread a warm bed.

    He came to love his life, though he had been seen

    cursing it before your beneficence.

    أو كنتَ أنفَ المجد كنتَ المارنا

    If you were glory's eye, you would be its pupil;

    if you were glory's nose, you would be its tender tip.

    If the spheres of high achievement were seven,

    you would pierce them, ascending to them as an eighth.

    Take it, Abu al-Husayn, as though it were

    patches of meadow clothed in a clouded day.

    It scattered its praise upon you, as though

    scattering storehouses of fragrant musk.

    May the days never frighten your roaming herds after this,

    nor ever look upon you with hostile, sidelong eyes.

    When Time strikes, may it be just,

    disciplining and setting right, not leading astray.
