قالواthey said هجاكhe lampooned you أبوAbu (father of) حفصHafs فقلتso I said لهمto them
قالوا هجاك أبو حفص فقلت لهم
بذاكby that أمكننيhe enabled me منto قَفْدِslapping يافُوخِهْthe crown of his head
بذاك أمكنني من قَفْدِ يافُوخِهْ
They said, “Abu Hafs has lampooned you,” so I told them:
They said Abu Hafs derided you, so I said to them,
“By that, he has enabled me to slap the crown of his head.
By that he enabled me to reside in his spacious abode.
أقطعتُI granted as a fief عرضيmy honor أباAbu (father of) حفصHafs وأقطعنيand he granted me
أقطعتُ عرضي أبا حفص وأقطعني
أنthat أنزِلI may dwell الدهْرَforever أنَّىwherever شئتُI wished فيin كُوخِهْhis hut
أن أنزِل الدهْرَ أنَّى شئتُ في كُوخِهْ
I granted Abu Hafs my honor as a fief, and he granted me
I offered my honor to Abu Hafs and he offered me
the right to dwell forever, wherever I wished, in his hut.”
To spend my life however I wish in his dwelling.
