أراد الغيث أن يحكيك جودا

أراد الغيث أن يحكيك جودا

فقصَّر بعد أن أحيا البلادا

فقصَّر بعد أن أحيا البلادا

The rain wished to imitate munificence,

The rain sought to match you in generosity,

yet fell short after bringing the lands to life.

yet fell short after reviving the lands.

فقلتُ غَلْطتَ جودُ أبي عَلّيٍ

فقلتُ غَلْطتَ جودُ أبي عَلّيٍ

يقصِّر عن مداه من أرادا

يقصِّر عن مداه من أرادا

So I said: You are mistaken—Abu Ali’s generosity

So I said, 'You erred: Abu Ali's generosity—

makes whoever would rival it fall short of its reach.

whoever seeks to match it falls short of its reach,

لأن الجود منه كل يوم

لأن الجود منه كل يوم

وأنت تجود أياماً عِدادا

وأنت تجود أياماً عِدادا

For generosity flows from him every day,

for bounty comes from him every day,

whereas you bestow your bounty only on numbered days.

while you give on only a few days.

وأنت تجود أرضاً بعد أرض

وأنت تجود أرضاً بعد أرض

وكفّاه يَعُمَّان البلادا

وكفّاه يَعُمَّان البلادا

You are bountiful to one land after another,

And you give to one land after another,

but his two hands encompass all the lands.

while his two hands encompass all the lands.'
