رمضانُRamadan يزعمُهُclaim it to be الغواةُthe misguided مباركٌblessed
صدقُواthey spoke truly وجدّكby your fortune إنهindeed it is لَطويلُcertainly long
The misguided claim Ramadan is blessed.
Ramadan, the misguided claim it blessed,
They spoke truly—by your fortune, it is long indeed.
They spoke true, your generosity is endless,
شهرٌa month لعمرُكby your life لاnot يقلُّis small قليلهُits smallest portion
وكذاand likewise المباركwhat is blessed ليسis not منهof it قليلanything small
A month—by your life—whose smallest portion is not small;
A month, by your life, whose little is no less,
And so it is with the blessed: no part of it is small.
And the blessed too has no lack of bounteousness,
تتطاولُstretch themselves out الأيامthe days فيهin it بجهدِهاwith all their might
فكأنَّso it is as though عهدَthe memory of الأمسِyesterday منهin it محيلa year old
The days in it stretch themselves out with all their might,
The days in it slowly crawl with their toil,
So that the memory of yesterday in it seems a year old.
As if yesterday from it is now timeless,
لوif أنهit were للقاطعينfor travelers مسافةًa distance
لحسبتَyou would reckon أنthat الشبرthe handspan فيهاwithin it مِيلa mile
Were it a distance for travelers to cross,
If it were a journey for travelers to roam,
You would think a handspan within it a mile.
You'd think each inch of it spans over a mile.
