سيشكرwill give thanks ربُّthe Lord of الناسmankind ماwhat قدalready فعلتَهُyou have done it
بناfor us بادئاًtaking the initiative والربُّand the Lord للبرّfor kindness أشكرُmost grateful
The Lord of mankind will thank you for what you have done
The Lord of mankind will thank what you have done
For us, taking the initiative; and the Lord is most grateful for kindness.
Initiating and the Lord thanks benevolence
فلاso do not تُولنيbestow on me البتراءَthe truncated favor منكfrom you فإنماfor only
وليُّthe giver of اليدthe hand البتراءsevered منone who هوhe أبترcut off
So grant me no favor cut short, for only
So do not deprive me of your generosity, for only
One himself cut off offers a severed hand.
The one with a severed hand is deprived of generosity
وأعقِبْand follow up إذاwhen أبدأتَyou have begun عُرفاًa kindness فإنماfor indeed
بوادئهits beginnings تنسىare forgotten وعقباهand its outcome تُذكرis remembered
And follow up when you have begun a kindness, for
And if you initiate a custom, reciprocate
Its beginnings are forgotten, while its outcome is remembered.
For beginnings are forgotten but endings remembered
ولاand do not تكُbe ممنamong those who يلحظlooks at المجدُglory فعلهُhis deed
وأولاهand its beginning معروفkindness وأُخراهand its ending منكرُwrongdoing
And do not be one whose deed glory looks upon,
And be not of those whose deed seeks glory
Its beginning kindness, its ending wrongdoing.
Yet initiates benevolence and concludes wrongdoing
ألمhave you not تردentered دنياthe world of الناسpeople تكسوclothes شبابهاits youth
وبهجتهاand its splendor الأحياءthe living ثمthen تنكّرturns hostile
Have you not entered people's world, which drapes its youth
Have you not seen people's world dress its youth
And its splendor over the living, then turns hostile?
And its liveliness then deny them
فتُشكىso it is complained of وفيماand in what قدّرdecreed اللهGod عاذرan excusing cause
لأفعالهاfor its deeds لكنهاyet it ليسis not تُعذرexcused
So it is complained of, though God's decree affords an excuse
So it is blamed, yet excused for its acts
For its deeds; yet it is not excused.
By God's decree, though no excuse absolves it
يلومونهاthey blame it مضطرةًcompelled مستقيدةًsubmissive
فكيفso how تُرىdo you suppose يلحونthey reproach منone who يتحيرis bewildered
They blame it, though compelled and submissive;
They blame it though coerced and fettered
So how, do you suppose, will they reproach one who is bewildered?
Yet how can they blame the lost and confused?
ومنand whoever كانis فيin أنto يمنعwithhold الحقّwhat is due شاعراًa poet
فإنيthen indeed I فيin أنْto أبذلَI lavish اللَّومblame أشْعَرa greater poet
And whoever is a poet at withholding what is due,
And if to forbid right makes one a poet
Then I am a greater poet at lavishing blame.
Then in blaming I am a greater poet
فلاso do not تجعلmake الحرمانdeprivation أمراًa matter مقدراًpredestined
فيلقاكso it confronts you منfrom قوليmy words ملامreproach مقدرpredestined
So do not make deprivation something predestined,
So make not deprivation foreordained
Lest predestined reproach from my words confront you.
Lest you meet reproach and blame ordained
