أياديfavors بنيthe sons of الجرّاحal-Jarrah عنديfor me كثيرةٌmany
وأكثرُand greater منهاthan them أنهاthat they لاnot تُكَدَّرُare marred
The favors of Banu al-Jarrah to me are many,
I have many benefactors, more numerous
and greater still is that they are never marred.
Than my enumeration of them here.
همُthey القومthe people يَنسوْنforget الأياديَthe favors منهُمُfrom them
عليكupon you ولكنَّand yet المواعيدthe promises تُذكَرare remembered
They are people who forget the favors they bestow
Though people forget their benefaction
on you, but their promises are remembered.
Upon you, promises are brought to mind.
وإنand though كنتُI was قدalready أُهملْتُI was neglected بعدafter رعايةٍcare
وأُغفلتُand I was overlooked حتىuntil قيلit was said أشعثُdisheveled أغبرdust-covered
Though I have been neglected after being cared for,
If I was neglected after being nurtured,
and overlooked until I was called disheveled and dust-covered,
And forgotten until called unkempt and dusty,
وقُلِّدتُand I was charged with شُغْلاًwork ضَرُّهُits harm ليto me معَجّلٌimmediate
سريعswift وأمّاand as for نفعهits benefit فمؤخرthen it is delayed
and charged with work whose harm to me is immediate,
And was appointed to a task whose harm to me
swift, while its benefit is delayed,
Was quick, while its benefit delayed,
أروحI go in the evening وأغدوand I go in the morning فيهin it أنصَبَmost exhausted عاملٍworker
وأصفَرهand the yellowest of them كفّاًin palm فكمْso how much أتَصَبَّرI force myself to endure
I labor at it evening and morning, the weariest of workers,
I go to and fro therein as an industrious worker
and the emptiest-handed—how much I struggle to endure!
Whose palms turned yellow, so how have I endured!
إذاif بعتُI sell صَوْنيmy safeguarding حُرَّthe noble part of وجهيmy face وراحتيand my rest
بجوعٍfor hunger فَمَنthen who مِنِّيthan me أتَبُّmore ruined وأخسرand a greater loser
If I sell the safeguarding of my noble face and my rest
When I sell my protection and dignity
for hunger, who is more ruined and a greater loser than I?
For hunger, who could I blame and take to task?
ألاah حبذاhow welcome الأعمالwork فيin كلevery حالةٍcircumstance
إذاif كانthere is منهاfrom it وجهُan avenue of نفعٍbenefit مُيَسَّرreadily available
Ah, how welcome is work in every circumstance,
How excellent are works in every condition
if some avenue of benefit from it lies open!
When ease and benefit can be derived!
فأماbut as for إذاwhen كَدَّتْit exhausts وأكْدتْand yields nothing علىfor الفتىthe young man
فماthen not هيit بالمعروفa kindness بلrather هيit منكرa wrong
But when it exhausts a young man and yields him nothing,
But when they weary and weigh upon the youth,
it is no kindness, but a wrong.
They are not praiseworthy - rather something to forbid.
وإنّand indeed أباAbu (father of) عبدAbd (servant of) الإلهal-Ilah (God) لسيدsurely a noble lord
وفيand at الحالonce لوif يُعْنَىhe cared بحاليabout my condition مُغيِّرone who changes it
And Abu Abd al-Ilah is surely a noble lord,
Abu Abdillah is a master who could,
and would change my plight at once, if he cared about it.
Were my condition brought to his attention, effect change.
وإنّand indeed لهhe has منfrom فضلهhis generosity لمُحرِّكاًsurely a spur
علىalthough أنهاthey are indeed الأخلاقdispositions قدmay تتنكرturn unfriendly
And surely he has in his generosity a spur to action,
By his grace he has the means
though dispositions may sometimes turn unfriendly.
To transform, though characters may alter.
وإنْand though كانhe is كالإبريزlike pure gold يصدأrusts غيرُهُthings other than it
ويأتيand comes عليهupon it ماwhatever أتىhas come وهوwhile it is أحمرred
And though he is like pure gold—other metals rust,
And if he is like brass that tarnishes others
yet whatever befalls it, it remains red.
While he remains red despite what came upon him,
سأزجرI shall repel عنهfrom him اللّومblame منfrom كلevery لائمٍreproacher
حِفاظاًout of loyalty لهto him ماas long as دامthere remains ليfor me عنهaway from him مَزجَرa means of repelling
I shall drive every reproacher's blame away from him,
I will hold back blame from him against every critic
out of loyalty to him, as long as I have grounds to ward it off.
To protect him as long as I can hold back.
وأعذُرهُand I excuse him ماas long as دامthere remains للعذرfor an excuse موضعٌroom
وأنظِرهُand I grant him respite ماas long as دامتِcontinues النفسthe soul تنْظرwaits
And I shall excuse him as long as there is room for an excuse,
And I will excuse him as long as there is room for excuses,
and grant him respite as long as my soul waits.
And wait for him as long as the soul can wait.

And I think one day his soul will fill him with pride,
And I will count on him one day to be moved
and he will take the most glorious course in my affair.
To do for my affair that which is most sublime.
ونفسُand the soul of أبيAbu (father of) عبدAbd (servant of) الإلهal-Ilah (God) ضنينةٌjealously protective
بهof him أنto تراهit sees him حيثwhere يُكْدىhe fails to give ويعذرand is excused
And Abu Abd al-Ilah's soul is too protective
And Abu Abdillah's soul is too noble
of him to see him where he fails to give and is excused.
To see him tortured and blamed.
وماand not هيit عنfrom لومreproach لهof him بمُفيقةٍrelenting

Nor will it let up in reproaching him
Nor is it apt to blame him
until it sees him bestowing favors and being thanked.
Until it sees him rewarded and thanked -

Help me, Abu Abd al-Ilah, and do not say,
I mean Abu Abdillah, and do not say
'I helped, but predestined fate defeated me.'
I intended the ordained destiny.
ففيfor in الأمرthe matter إنif عاينتَهُyou examine it متيسّرٌsomething feasible
وفيand in الأمرthe matter إنif آتيتَهُyou undertake it متعذَّرsomething unattainable
For in the matter, if you examine it, there is something feasible,
For in the matter, if you see it facilitated,
and in the matter, if you undertake it, something unattainable.
And in the matter, if you find it difficult,
أيعطشdo they thirst? أمثاليpeople like me وواديكwhile your valley فائضٌoverflowing
ويُجدِبand suffer drought أمثاليpeople like me وواديكwhile your valley أخضرgreen
Do men like me go thirsty while your valley overflows,
Do I thirst when your valley has plenty
and do men like me suffer drought while your valley is green?
And wither when your valley is green?

That cannot be, for bounty is innate in you,
That one disdained that your nobility
and you are glory's house, inhabited by praise,
Is your nature, and that you live honored and praised,

and you have not preferred pleasure to what is right
And that you do not prefer over truth the pleasure
at desire's bidding, for right is what you prefer.
Of judging by passion. Truth with you takes precedence.

And you have always chosen your courses with wisdom,
And you have continued to choose matters wisely,
so the best of them is the course you choose.
The most excellent course being what you select.
