غرَّدَsang الطيرُthe birds فيin الرِّياضِthe gardens ونَاحَاand lamented
وشكاand complained of العشقَlove والغرَامَand passion وباحاand confessed
The birds sang in the gardens and lamented,
The birds chirped in the gardens and cried,
And complained of love and passion, and confessed.
Complaining of love and passion with sighs,
ونسيمُand the breeze الشَّمَالِthe north أهدىoffered as a gift سُحيْراًjust before dawn
منfrom شَذَاthe scent الزهرِthe flowers عَرْفَهُits fragrance الفيَّاحَاfar-spreading
And the north breeze offered, just before dawn,
The northern breeze brought a scent
From the flowers' scent, their far-spreading fragrance.
Of flowers, their fragrance it lent.
واجْتَلَيْناand we beheld علىamid الندىthe dew والتَّدَانِيand closeness
بِكْرa virgin دنٍّa wine jar برأْسِهَاon her head الشَّيْبُgray hair لاحاgleamed
And, close together amid the dew, we beheld
We sat together on the dew and drew near,
A wine jar's virgin, gray hair gleaming on her head.
A maiden drew close, her temple graced with grey hair.
بِنْتُa daughter كرمٍa grapevine تُجْلَىis unveiled لكلِّfor every كريمnoble man
وسَنَاand the radiance نُورِهَاof her light كسَاclothed الأقداحاthe goblets
A daughter of the vine, unveiled for every noble man,
A noble girl who brings joy to the generous,
And the radiance of her light clothed the goblets.
Her radiance lit up the wine glasses fair.

She brought us comfort and delight,
How could she not, when she gives rise to delights?
How could she not, she makes gladness take flight.
كلماwhenever أظلمَdeepened الظَّلامُthe darkness عليناover us
واقتبسناand we borrowed منfrom نورهاher light مصباحاa lamp
Whenever darkness deepened over us,
Whenever darkness descended upon us,
And we borrowed a lamp from her light,
And we lit a lamp for her light.
أشْرَقَتْshe shone فيin الكُؤُوسِthe cups كالشَّمْسlike the sun ليلاًat night
فحسبناso we reckoned المساءَthe evening منهاbecause of her صَباحاmorning
She shone in the cups like the sun at night,
She shone in the cups like the sun at night,
So through her we took evening for morning.
We thought the evening from her was sunrise bright.
