Tell Abu Sahl, the non-Arab youth whom

the Arabs have come to wish were one of their own:

O you whose resolve and tongue have become

two distinct swords, in crises and in speeches.

Praise be to God, through whose grace

we have been granted, in you, a happy outcome.

And praise be to God, who turned death away,

and praise be to God, who dispelled distress.

We once used to press you for gifts,

until, when you were rescued from ruin's grasp,

the blessing grew immense through you, for you have diverted us

from everything for which we had a desire.

So leave gifts aside: you yourself are a gift to us

from the Lord of the ways of ascent; and bestow no gifts.

We are indeed ashamed, now that you have come to us,

after despair, to burden you with requests.

Who can see you, now that you are safe, and not see

wealth in you, not in silver or gold?

We seek nothing but you; and it is nothing but

ravenous greed for a man to seek beyond his need.
