مرَتْdrew forth ماءَwater عينيmy eye فاستهلso it streamed علىupon النحرthe upper breast
مرَتْ ماءَ عيني فاستهل على النحر
تباريحُtorments شوقٍlonging فيin الحشاthe inner breast كلظىlike the blaze of الجمرthe embers
تباريحُ شوقٍ في الحشا كلظى الجمر
Tears were wrung from my eyes and streamed down upon my breast,
My eyes shed tears, so they descended upon my throat
by torments of longing in my heart, like the blaze of embers,
My yearning in the dark night is like embers aflame
إلىfor صاحبٍa friend أضحىhas become فؤاديmy heart صاحباًa companion
إلى صاحبٍ أضحى فؤادي صاحباً
بفرقتهthrough parting from him للهمto worry والحزنand sorrow والفكرand brooding
بفرقته للهم والحزن والفكر
for a friend—my heart has become a companion,
For a companion whom my heart has become devoted to
through parting from him, to worry, sorrow, and brooding.
In his absence it filled with anxiety, sadness and thoughts
تظلcontinue دموعtears العينthe eye عندupon ادكارهremembering him
تظل دموع العين عند ادكاره
تَحدَّرstream down والأنفاسُand the breaths تَصْعدrise فيin الصدرthe chest
تَحدَّر والأنفاسُ تَصْعد في الصدر
At the thought of him, tears from my eyes keep
The tears of my eyes remain when remembering him
streaming down, while breaths rise within my chest.
Flowing down as sighs ascend in my chest
أأيوبO Ayyub جادتmay it water generously كلّevery أرضٍland حللتَهاyou settled in it
أأيوب جادت كلّ أرضٍ حللتَها
مجلجلةٌthundering وَطفاءrain-laden واكفةpouring down القطرrain
مجلجلةٌ وَطفاء واكفة القطر
O Ayyub, may every land you settle in be drenched
Oh Ayoub, every land you tread
by a thundering, rain-laden cloud pouring down its rain.
Is filled with light and abundant rain
ولاand may you not زلتcease to be محفوظاًprotected بحفظكthrough your keeping عهدَthe pledge of منthose whom
ولا زلت محفوظاً بحفظك عهدَ من
تودyou love إذاwhen مالturns الخليلthe close friend إلىtoward الغدرِbetrayal
تود إذا مال الخليل إلى الغدرِ
And may you always be protected for keeping faith with those
And I remain protected by your covenant one who
you love, when a close friend turns toward betrayal.
If a friend tilts towards betrayal
ألاAh! ليتif only شعريmy knowledge لمdid not أشيِّعكI see you off ظاعناًdeparting
ألا ليت شعري لم أشيِّعك ظاعناً
وشيّعتنيand you saw me off منfrom قبلbefore ذاكthat إلىto القبرthe grave
وشيّعتني من قبل ذاك إلى القبر
Ah, if only I had not seen you off as you departed,
Oh, I wish I knew why I didn't escort you when leaving
and you had seen me off to the grave before then.
And you escorted me to the grave beforehand
وياand oh ليتنيwould that I فارقتI parted with بعضsome of جوارحيmy limbs
ويا ليتني فارقت بعض جوارحي
وأنكand that you ماnot بوعدتyou were kept distant عنيfrom me قذاthe measure of شبرِa handspan
وأنك ما بوعدت عني قذا شبرِ
And oh, would that I had parted with some of my limbs,
And oh, how I wish I had lost some of my limbs
and you had not been kept even a handspan away from me.
While you didn't depart from me a single inch
