كُفِّيstop مَلامَكِyour reproach قدalready ملكتُI have mastered عنانيmy reins
وحفِظتُand I heeded فيكconcerning you نصيحةthe advice of النَّدمانِthe boon companion
Stop your reproach; I have mastered my reins,
Silence your blame, for I have tamed my soul,
And heeded the boon companion's advice concerning you.
And heeded the counsel of the penitent.
أأغيبُam I to be absent? عنكِfrom you فتنعمينَand so you enjoy برقدةٍin slumber
لاno خيرَgood بعدكafter you فيin حبيبa beloved ثانيa second
Am I to be away from you, so you may enjoy a slumber?
Shall I be absent from you and enjoy sleep?
After you, there is no good in a second beloved.
No good after you in a second love.
هلّاwhy did you not وَفيْتِyou kept faith بماwith what وعدتyou promised كماjust as وفىhe kept faith
لكِto you منthe one whom وطئتyou trampled بهupon him علىdespite الإحسانkindness
Why did you not fulfill what you promised, just as he kept faith
If only you had kept your promise, as
With you—the one you trampled on despite his kindness?
I kept my kindness when our paths did cross.
إنif كانhad صافحَshaken hands with للكرىin slumber ليof mine ناظراًan eye
طيفٌa phantom فلاthen may ... not عَمرتْflourish بهwith it أجفانيmy eyelids
If an eye of mine has exchanged a handshake in slumber
If he who looked upon me happily
With a phantom, then may my eyelids never flourish with it.
Is a specter, then he brought no joy.
حَسبيenough for me منof العيشِthe life الذيwhich خُوِّلتُهI was granted it
فيin ظلِّthe shade of وصلِكُمُunion with you (plural) وطيبand the sweetness of زمانيmy time
Enough for me, of the life I have been granted,
Enough is the life which I was given
In the shade of union with you and the sweetness of my days,
In the shade of your affection and our time.
شُربيmy drinking of الكؤوسَthe cups علىin منادمةِconvivial fellowship with الصِّباyouth
وغناءand the singing of منْone who إنif شئتُهI desire it غنَّانيsings to me
Is my drinking from cups in convivial fellowship with youth,
I drank cups in the company of youth
And the singing of one who, if I desire it, sings to me:
And sang what songs my singer sang for me.
لمنwhose الديارُthe dwellings ببُرْقةِat Burqat الروحانِal-Rawhan
إذwhen لاnot نبيعُwe sell زمانَناour time بزمانِfor another time
"Whose are the dwellings at Burqat al-Rawhan?"
To whom do the meadows belong, when they are green?
When we would not trade our time for any other.
For we do not sell our days for days.
