من حبيب فبتُّ أرعى الثُّريّا
Sleep was driven from my eyelids by a vision
Sleep was chased from my eyes by a vision
Of a beloved; so I spent the night watching the Pleiades,
Of my beloved, so I stayed up herding the flocks

Deeming my watch over them, for my frequent likening
Urging them on though they were many
Of them to the one I love, incumbent upon me.
For she was distracted by the one I love
حَجَبوهُthey hid him لكيso that أُرىI might be seen سالياًforgetful عنof
حَجَبوهُ لكي أُرى سالياً عن
هhim علىbecause of نأيهِhis distance فأُعقبتُso I was left with غَيَّاinfatuation
ه على نأيهِ فأُعقبتُ غَيَّا
They hid him away so that I might seem to have forgotten
They hid him from me so I would stop
Him because of his distance; yet I was left with infatuation.
Pining for him from afar, but I only grew more lost
لمnot يَرواthey realized أنthat كلَّماwhenever شطَّhe grew distant عنيfrom me
لم يَروا أن كلَّما شطَّ عني
زادَهُmade him more بعدُهhis distance اقتراباًclose إليَّاto me
زادَهُ بعدُه اقتراباً إليَّا
They did not realize that whenever he drew far from me,
They did not see that every time they pulled him
His distance brought him closer to me.
