غنِّ أبا حفصٍ إذا جئته
بشعرهwith his poetry فيَّabout me بإيقاعِwith a beat
بشعره فيَّ بإيقاعِ
Sing to Abu Hafs when you visit him,
Sing, O father of Hafs, when you come to him
his verses about me, to a beat;
With his poetry in me and its rhythm
وليكنand let it be الإيقاعthe beat (also: the striking) فيon رأسهhis head
وليكن الإيقاع في رأسه
منfrom حاذقone skilled بالقفدat cuffing the back of the head صفّاعِa vigorous slapper
من حاذق بالقفد صفّاعِ
and let the beat fall on his head,
Let the rhythm in his head be
from one skilled at cuffing the back of the head, a vigorous slapper.
From one skilled in tying firmly the bracelet
