تأمُّلُscrutinizing العيبِthe fault عيبُa fault
تأمُّلُ العيبِ عيبُ
وليسand there is no فيin الحقِّthe truth رَيْبُdoubt
وليس في الحقِّ رَيْبُ
Scrutinizing faults is a fault,
Criticizing fault is fault itself,
and there is no doubt about the truth.
Truth is above all doubt.
وكلُّand all خيرٍgood وشرٍّand evil
وكلُّ خيرٍ وشرٍّ
خلفَbeyond العواقبِthe outcomes غيبُunseen
خلفَ العواقبِ غيبُ
And all good and evil
Good and evil both
lie hidden beyond the outcomes.
Lie behind consequences unseen.
إنْif يُمسكِwithhold الناسُthe people عنّيfrom me
إنْ يُمسكِ الناسُ عنّي
سَيْباًbounty فللَّهthen God has سيبُbounty
سَيْباً فللَّه سيبُ
If people withhold from me
If people abandon me,
bounty, then God has bounty.
To God belongs abandonment.
ياah رُبَّmany a غُمّةِgloom خَطْبٍa calamity
يا رُبَّ غُمّةِ خَطْبٍ
فيهاwithin it منfrom الصُّنعgracious care جَيبُan opening
فيها من الصُّنع جَيبُ
Ah, many a calamity's gloom
O Lord of an afflicted plight
has within it an opening wrought by gracious care.
Wherein skill avails me naught,
لاdo not تَحْقِرَنَّever disdain سُيَيْباًa little gift
لا تَحْقِرَنَّ سُيَيْباً
كمhow often جَرَّbrought نفعاًbenefit سيَيْبa little gift
كم جَرَّ نفعاً سيَيْب
Never disdain a little gift:
Scorn not my desolation -
how often a little gift has brought benefit!
What gain it oft has brought!
