Say to the emir—may God perpetuate his rule

and raise him in standing and renown:

What would a man say if God said to him:

"Whom have you chosen to renew the appointed times?

Through whom shall We establish the times of prayer,

so that he may stand in defiance of the tyrants?

Would you accept a one-eyed man's guardianship of My rights,

when I have made you a missile against demons,

and opened the East to you, joined

to the West, while you never lacked victory and firm support?

Was no one worthy to fulfill My due

but a puny one-eyed man who cannot keep time?

Had it been your field, you would have guarded its position

only with the eyes of those who string rubies.

But for My due you appointed a paltry guardian,

so its allotted time is forever being whittled away.

    أجريت رزقي عليه غير تقويتِ

    You watched over My due through one with a nourished eye;

you allotted him My provision, yet gave no nourishment."

What would the man's answer be then?

May God shield you from blame and reproach.

Cleanse your garments of one not deemed worthy

by the pious of a blessing when he sneezes.

Cleanse your garments of one who has no garments

to cover his sin but worn-out, shredded rags.

Send him away from you to a rural district, in haste,

or to some hard, rugged wilderness of the earth.

Pitch mines are better suited to him—

O mine of musk, cast him off to Hit.

Abu Ali—though wrongly you were given that byname—

you have indeed lost your way in trackless, barren wastes.

How can you escape, having plunged deep, wandering at random,

when you are no expert guide among those wastes?

You came, one-eyed and cowardly, to fight me,

and cowards are no match for bold warriors.

What drove you, with no reward to claim,

to fight in front of coffins?

    فاصبر لأنكرِ تصبيحٍ وتنبيتِ

    You roused my war, which had slept far from you;

so endure the most dreadful raids by morning and night.

I can almost see you facing my blaze

with folly, blundering through it like a blind man,

like one shielding himself from scorching fire, who equips himself

in ignorance with two coats of armor of naphtha and sulfur.

So what he sought help from became an ally against him,

and his own hands tore him utterly apart.

    قُبحاً لكلّ غبيٍّ غير سكِّيتِ

    You have become the most tongue-tied—and most garrulous—of the tongue-tied;

shame on every fool who will not keep quiet!

Ever-speaking inarticulacy casts you into error,

while the utterly tongue-tied man remains safe.

Take it, marked and relentless in pursuing whoever flees,

as though it were a star on the trail of a demon.
