Say to Abu Sahl who inherited gentle refinement and noble horses,
Romans and Persians the subtleties of the sciences:
"My pacts with you have remained imprisoned, so set imprisonment against them.
أمَّاas for عهوديmy pledges فلمand have not تزلceased to be حبساًan endowment
عليكfor you فاجعلso set إزاءهاto match them حُبُساendowments
As for my pledges, they have always been an endowment
How many a stance from you I hoped for when we would meet as comrades,
for you; set endowments of your own to match them.
I expected when we met again as friends.
كمhow many وقفةٍa pause منكfrom you كنتُI used to أعهدُهاknow it
أعتدُّهاI counted it حينwhen نلتقيwe meet أنساcompanionship
How many a pause of yours I used to know,
Yet it was changed and followed by doubts that make the radiant doubt,
counting it as companionship whenever we met!
The affection between us expired unjustly, so make a wedding follow the funeral.
فماso what لهاwith it بُدِّلتit was changed وأعقبهاand followed it
رَيبٌdoubt يُريبunsettles الخلائقthe dispositions الشُمُساunruly
So why has it been changed, and followed
You are a doctor so be not sullen, and medicine refuses the sullen.
by doubt that unsettles unruly natures?
Leave a love to heal from sickness, and do not renew his decline.
أمَتَّyou killed ماwhat حيَّlived منof مَودَّتِناour affection
ظلماًunjustly فأعقِبْso bring in its wake منin place of مأتمa funeral gathering عُرُساa wedding feast
You killed what lived of our affection
I blamed you for being miserly, not foolishly,
unjustly; so let a wedding feast follow the funeral.
So I may find the confused pacts.
أنتyou طبيبٌa physician فلاso do not تكنbe شكِساًill-tempered
والطبand medicine يأبىrejects الخلائقَthe dispositions الشُكساill-tempered
You are a physician, so do not be ill-tempered,
And you remained thus, the way of one whose words are cultured and noble horses.
and medicine rejects ill-tempered natures.
The reproaches of loyal ones speak, and I do not like speechless reproaches."

And let affection recover from illness,
and do not bring a fresh relapse of its ailment.
عاتبتُI reproached شحّاًout of possessive concern عليكfor you لاnot عبَثاًidly
كيماso that أجِدَّI renew المعاهدthe familiar bonds اللُبساworn-out
I reproached you, unwilling to lose you—not idly—
so that I might renew the bonds worn threadbare.

And such has always been the way of one
who hones his words and one who is discerning.

The reproaches of the sincere speak aloud,
and I do not love mute reproaches.
