قلsay لأبيto Abu القاسمal-Qasim المُرَجَّىal-Murajja (the hoped-for)
قابلَكَhas met you الدهرُtime بالعجائبْwith wonders
Say to Abu al-Qasim al-Murajja:
Tell Abu al-Qasim al-Murajja
Time has met you with wonders.
That fate has confronted you with wonders
ماتdied لكof yours ابنٌa son وكانand he was زيناًan adornment
وعاشand lived on ذوthe one with النقصshortcomings والمثالِبْand faults
A son of yours died, and he was an adornment;
A perfect son of yours has died
And the one with shortcomings and faults lived on.
While the flawed and blemished one lives
حياةُthe life of هذاthis one كموتِlike the death of هذاthis one
فلستَso you are not تخلوare free منfrom المصائبْmisfortunes
This one's life is like that one's death,
This one's life is like that one's death
So you are not free from misfortunes.
You cannot be free of tribulations
