Rejoice in a victory laid open to you,

From a giver of good, himself endowed with it.

And drink beside the narcissus a ladled draught,

In the cup, not cooked over a kindled flame.

As though it were stirred with musk—

    No, it is musk, unmixed.

    Among drinking companions, all unbridled,

    None reined back from waywardness.

Their wineskins lie flat in the house,

And their lute is not laid flat:

Hollow and resonant; the skins are filled

With the sweetest draughts, gulped and sipped.

Among these, one slain for their wine-vessel,

    And one alive, unslain.

How lovely the narcissus, a fragrant flower

For the nose of an evening drinker and a morning drinker.

As though, from the sweetness of its fragrances,

It were fashioned from a refreshing breeze and from spirit.

It revealed faces unmarred by ugliness

In a season free of ugliness.

How lovely it is to the eye, how lovely—

A gazer at the drinkers, itself gazed upon!

As though the dew upon its blossom

    Were tears from eyes, unshed.

If the rose beheld its seasons,

You would see no rose but one cast down.

Do you not see the redness in its face

Speaking of the shame of one exposed?

Turn, both of you, from the rose toward a lord,

Praised among the lords of fragrant flowers.

As though its days spread abroad,

    Amid dew-drenched and sprinkled blossoms,

What the panegyrists spread about Qasim,

In brief accounts of him and detailed ones.

Ah, for its breaths in the darkness,

And as light makes its way through the air!

Qasim, you who distribute your wealth,

May you ever remain a sea, undrained.

You are he whom no beholder has met

    Except with 'All-holy!' and 'All-glorious!'

Nor has anyone passed him and his connections by

    In preference, save the sorrow-stricken.

Nor have we seen praise of anyone else

Except as a herd never sent to pasture.

Nor has an investor in his praise returned

Except with profit earned from him.

    فابْقَى بقاء المصْطَفَى نُوحِ

    Noah's flood falls short of this generosity;

So live as long as Noah, the chosen one.

    Laden yet at ease, bearing

The weight of high honors, not overburdened.

May people never lack a giver's bounty

Of kindness, and the joy of one who receives.

You wound your wealth for the gift-seeker,

Rather than your honor, which remains unwounded.

O house of Wahb, your enemies have spent the night

    Some slaughtered, some stretched out.

Nor has any rival butting against you escaped

The fate of an attacker slain by the one he butted.

Nor has any coveted fortune of yours been free

Of a spiteful foe clad as one wounded in the flank.

And your enviers have died of anguish,

    Some sword-struck, some spear-struck.

Through you, the world has become cheerful,

    At ease, its courtyards spacious:

A refuge for a neighbor kept from ruin,

A lodging for a guest not barked at.

    أدَّى نصيحٌ حقَّ منصوحِ

    Let people take refuge in your shade;

A sincere adviser has paid the advised his due.
