Receive my counsel, O son of the minister,
Heed my advice, O son of the minister
With your fair, radiant countenance.
With your handsome radiant face
إذاif ماever (emphatic) كنتyou are ذاpossessed of سخطٍwrath كبيرٍgreat
فلاthen do not تسخطbe angry علىwith رجلa man صغيرsmall
If your wrath is great,
If you are very angry
Do not turn it on a little man.
Do not be angry with a little man
سخطتyou were angry علىwith مهندسكyour engineer الملقّىthe one cast down
وماand not هوhe كفءُa match for سخطكyour wrath بالضميرin thought
You raged at your engineer, cast down,
You were angry with your humble engineer
Yet he is no match for your inward wrath.
Who is not equal to your anger in conscience
فكيفthen how إذاif أسأتyou made harsh القولthe speech فيهabout him
وكيفand how إذاif اعتزمتyou resolved علىupon النكيرrebuke
How much more, then, if you speak harshly of him,
How could you speak ill of him
And how much more if you resolve to rebuke him?
How could you intend evil against him
ظلمتyou wronged وماand not ظلمتyou wronged الخصمthe adversary لكنbut
ظلمتyou wronged العْتبreproach ذاpossessing القدرstanding الخطيرlofty
You did wrong—not to your adversary, but
You did wrong, not wronging the opponent, but
You wronged reproach itself, with its lofty worth.
You wronged the blame, that serious thing
قبيحٌshameful أنto تعاقبpunish مستكيناًa submissive person
وليسand there is not عليكagainst you غيركanyone other than you منany (emphatic) مُجيرa protector
It is shameful to punish one who submits,
It is ugly to punish a poor man
When none but you can shield him from you.
When there is no other to protect you but yourself
I seek protection for you منfrom إخافةfrightening مستجيرone seeking refuge
وأنتwhile you مكانُthe place of أمنِsafety المستجيرthe refuge-seeker
I would shield you from frightening one who seeks refuge,
I seek refuge for you from frightening one who seeks refuge
While you are the refuge-seeker's place of safety,
While you are the place of safety for the seeker of refuge
ومنand from إحلالbringing down قارعةٍa calamity بنفسٍupon a soul
رجتكit hoped in you لدىat the time of مخاذلةabandonment النصيرthe helper
And from bringing calamity upon a soul
And from replacing a gentle soul with a rough one
That hoped in you when its helper forsook it.
I hoped when abandoning the helper, you would show mercy
أسيرُكyour captive فاقْرِهِso offer him hospitality واعددْهُand count him ضيفاًa guest
فماfor no ضيفٌguest بأضعفany weaker منthan أسيرa captive
He is your captive: offer him hospitality and count him a guest,
Take your prisoner and count him a guest
For no guest is weaker than a captive.
For what guest is weaker than a prisoner
وليسand is not قرىًhospitality بأضعفany slighter منthan تجافٍforbearance
يكونis shown عنtoward المسيءthe wrongdoer منby القديرthe powerful one
Nor is any hospitality slighter than forbearance
And what visit poorer than avoiding
Shown toward a wrongdoer by one with power.
One who does wrong, however great he may be
إذاif سخطgrows angry المؤدبthe disciplinarian خيفfear is felt منهُof him
فكيفthen how تُرىdo you suppose منfrom السخطthe wrath المبيرِthat destroys
If the disciplinarian grows angry, he is feared;
When the courteous are angry, beware their anger
How much more, do you think, with wrath that destroys?
How much more those with raging anger
متىwhenever يُقرنis matched بسخطٍwith wrath منكfrom you قِرْنٌa rival
فدهرthen the age of الناسpeople ذوpossessed of الخطبthe calamity الكبيرgreat
Whenever a rival is matched with wrath from you,
When your anger is coupled with a mate
Then the age of men faces great calamity.
For the affairs of men are momentous indeed
أتوقِعُwould you assail بامرئٍa man لمnot يمسcome to evening يرجوhope for
سواكother than you علىagainst البليةcalamity منany (emphatic) ظهيرa helper
Would you assail a man who, at evening, hoped
I expect that one who did not touch and hopes
For no helper against calamity but you,
None but you as protection against affliction
ومنand one who لمnot يُكفَis spared ماwhat جرّتbrought about يداهُhis two hands

And one not spared what his own hands have wrought,
One who did not restrain what his hands did
Whose offense has thus led him in a halter?
Which led him into the heated path of ruin
