Praise be to God, O Abu Hasan,

Possessor of abundant blessings and favors.

You allotted me a pasture of leanness, and

    allotted others pastures of fatness.

You have laid repeated praise of you open to this judgment:

“It has gone astray, like weeping amid abandoned campsites.”

I adjure you by God, O Abu Hasan,

regarding a sacred bond never abased or dishonored:

Let no one connected by it depart from you

with his lot that of an idol-worshipper.

He complains of you, not openly voicing his complaint

against you, but rather a complaint against time.

Whoever complains of his time complains of you—and can you

allude to the soul apart from the body?

    You are the one through whom time is directed;

so, if it is blamed, you and it are bound by one tether.
