People have one festival; I have two within the festival,

When I see you, O son of proud lords.

When they celebrate two festivals in a year,

With your face, my days become days of celebration.

They said, “The crescent of Eid al-Fitr has appeared”; I said to them,

“The prince's face is a crescent never absent.”

The crescent whose rising I welcomed appeared,

Facing an auspicious crescent in you.

Renew and wear out both festivals amid blessings,

For which the nights allow nothing but renewal.

If your brother led the festival's army in his turn,

You were not diminished by lacking the army at the festival.

Indeed, if you stood alone apart from all people,

You would be the whole, and they like isolated individuals.

The splendor of command rests upon you,

Not through soldiers, nor through lean, long-necked steeds.

You are the prince whom his own high resolve appointed,

Without a recognized commission from the sovereign.

A lordship whose holder collects not wealth,

But the two prized things: praise and glorification.

Is a prince anything but one who aids with his gifts

Against the hostile turns of days white and black?

And you give aid against them whenever they oppress,

O son of the noble, with succor supplied by you.

Let dismissal and appointment do whatever they may:

For as long as you live, you rule the realm of generosity.

That lordship its bestower has raised too high

For people to possess the power to undo its knot.

A gift from God that no one can wrest away,

Not like something restored and then returned.

    أحْيا سَماحُك فيهمْ كُلَّ مَوْؤودِ

    Had you lived when people buried others alive, they would not have done so;

Your generosity would have revived every one buried alive among them.

Nothing brought round by time can harm you,

While, in either state, you wear the robe of one envied.

This, though there is no difference between you two—

And rightly so, for the two branches spring from one stem.

Despite the enemies, your brother has become a mountain,

Bearing up with you as an unbroken pillar.

    كلا الظَّهيرَيْنِ مَعْضُودٌ بمعضُودِ

    You support each other in reverence for your God;

Each of the two allies is upheld by an ally upheld.

So your company is united, and kindred natures are in harmony,

And strength is bound to strength, the fast-bound to the fast-bound.

And the two strands, when intertwined, suffice

For a stout, tightly twisted rope.

Each ally has added nothing to his companion's standing

Through his own but firmness and permanence.

No indeed; nor has either added to his companion's glory

Through his own glory but consolidation and elevation.

    ومَنْ أبَى ذاك مَوْطُوءُ اللَّغَاديدِ

    Thus the honor is yours together, and the glory yours together;

And whoever rejects this has his throat trampled.

Each acknowledges the excellence of his brother's nobility,

And you both have been worthy of distinction and lordship.

Mutual envy and rancor have died between you,

So every envier died the death of one consumed by grief.

Every charm was repelled that was breathed out

By the slanderers' spell-worker; they bit upon hard stones.

May your affairs remain forever joined in unity,

And your enemies' affairs be scattered apart.

If it is said, “A scabbard refuses to hold two swords together,”

Then you are two blades for drawing and unsheathing.

    كِلاكُما الدَّهرَ سَيْفٌ غير مغْمُودِ

    Neither of you needs a scabbard to hold you;

Each of you is forever a sword unsheathed.

Both bared against the enemy, you have turned away

From scabbards to the heads of champions.

United in support of God, you are occupied

With tyrants and rebels, not with hostility toward each other.

    عليكما بِرِقابِ العُنَّدِ الحِيدِ

    Neither of the two keen blades is commanded against its fellow;

Go, both of you, for the necks of the stubborn and wayward.

For a sword, instead of cutting a well-tempered sword like itself,

There is ample scope among crooked necks.

Let others be meant by the proverb cited,

For your case is not to be found in it.

Do not marvel that I dispute on your behalf a proverb

That the nights have made utterly enduring.

This is for that; and what follows is an oath,

By a witnessed manifestation of God's majesty:

A day that passes while my eye has not won

Its share of you is not counted in my lifetime.

But sickness long afflicted my guiding eye,

And for a month my condition was that of a fettered man.

An eye ailment I struggled with kept me from you,

Not diversions, nor the juice of grape clusters.

Even had I stayed away without excuse, my excuse would have been prepared for me

By your gracious judgment, prepared most thoroughly.

I endured in your absence—may you never endure their like—

A day of sickness vying with a night of sleeplessness.

Evening and morning find me in the darkness of my sight,

So my day is not marked off from my night.

As though, through both my day and its night, I were

In an eternity of night-darkness, drawn out.

Whenever I hear the sun mentioned, it grieves me,

And my sighs mount ever higher.

    بل فَقدُ وجهك أوْهَى رُكْنَ مَجْلُودي

    Yet it is not the loss of sunlight that has distressed me;

Rather, losing your face has weakened the pillar of my endurance.

The softness of a resting-place brings my side no repose,

And the bed of a sufferer is not comfortably spread.

I watch the stars—but how can I watch them,

When my eye's gaze is captive and fettered?

And whoever wishes that he might be granted

The watching of stars is the most afflicted of sufferers.

And the whole earth, wide as it is, closed in on me,

So my share of it became like my burial niche.

My only relief was my contemplating

You through the thoughts of a sorely exhausted heart.

How often I called upon you while hardship bound me,

And you are the ultimate appeal of everyone in distress.

I have exchanged my affliction for well-being,

With praise to a Lord praised in both conditions.

So open for your servant the door of excuse; for him

There has long been, through your kindness, a door never shut.

O you to whom, when a door's lock defies opening,

The resourceful hand over the keys.

By the star of your judgment every darkness is dispelled,

In which the star itself is utterly baffled.

If you dispute my excuse and its soundness,

Then let it be forgiveness of an offense I do not deny.

Nor, if you punish, would you punish a man

Already flogged with his own whip, apart from vengeance's whip.

My offense against myself is enough punishment for me,

If I have driven myself away, though no one drove me out.

If you pardon, you will always hold in pledge

My thanks, for bestowing favor after favor.

You make a necklace of favor, whose burden would weaken a mountain,

Yet it is a light collar upon the neck.

You bestow favors, then earnestly strive to loosen their binding

From necks, but it refuses anything save firmer binding.

And if you strike, how often you have straightened one bent,

As one straightens a pliant, supple Khatti spear.

O son of the noblest, take this praise-song, which came

From a spring clear for you, unfrequented.

It has no surplus except what you leave over,

So anyone else's drinking from it is but a scant draught.

A treasured affection with which my heart has singled you out,

And no other beloved's share has crowded you within it.

Devoting praise to you alone, apart from all people,

Is to me the same as my sincere devotion and my faith in God's oneness.

I have sought only my own good fortune and happiness,

And no reproach surrounds me for that.

You are the one whose praise, whenever I seek it,

Answers me, while my mind remains unwearied.

My sea is replenished by your sea, and so it deserves

Never to be seen, through all time, except undrained.

You have supplied my poetry with mutually supporting reinforcements

Of virtues that cannot be counted by enumeration.

No shot of my affection that I aimed at you has missed,

Nor has it been a slip from me, made without careful aim.
