خلافتناour estrangement حربٌwar ولُقْيانُناand our meeting سِلْمُpeace
خلافتنا حربٌ ولُقْيانُنا سِلْمُ
ألاbehold هكذاthus فلْيُثْمِرِso let bear fruit العقلُreason والعِلمُand knowledge
ألا هكذا فلْيُثْمِرِ العقلُ والعِلمُ
Our estrangement is war, and our meeting peace.
Our rule is war, and our coming together is peace
Behold, thus let reason and knowledge bear fruit.
Yes, in this way let reason and knowledge bear fruit
عذرتُكI spared you منfrom جَهليmy rash anger بحلميthrough my forbearance مُلاوةًfor a long while
عذرتُك من جَهلي بحلمي مُلاوةً
فأقْصِرso desist ولاand do not يَغْرُرْكdeceive you منabout جهليَmy rash anger الحلمُforbearance
فأقْصِر ولا يَغْرُرْك من جهليَ الحلمُ
I spared you my wrath through my forbearance for a long while.
I excuse your ignorance with my gentleness
So desist, and let not my forbearance mislead you about my wrath.
So be brief, and do not let my gentleness deceive you
وإلاand if not فإنيthen indeed I مُوقعٌwill inflict بكon you وقعةًa blow
وإلا فإني مُوقعٌ بك وقعةً
لكُلِّfor every سفيهٍfool منof مواعظهاits lessons قِسْمُa share
لكُلِّ سفيهٍ من مواعظها قِسْمُ
Otherwise, I shall deal you a blow,
Otherwise, I will confront you
Of whose lessons every fool shall have a share.
And for every fool, lessons can be drawn from it
وأيْقِنْand be certain بأنَّthat العلمknowledge إنif كانis صورةًa form
وأيْقِنْ بأنَّ العلم إن كان صورةً
فإنيthen indeed I لهfor it رُوحٌa spirit وأنتand you لهfor it جِسمُa body
فإني له رُوحٌ وأنت له جِسمُ
And be certain that, if knowledge is a form,
And know that though knowledge may be an image
Then I am its spirit, and you its body.
I am its soul, and you are its body
