بيومِon the day of بدرٍBadr أعزَّexalted الدينَthe faith ناصرُهُits defender
وبابنِand through the son of بدرٍBadr أعزexalted الظَّرْفَwit والأدباand letters
On the day of Badr, the faith’s defender exalted it;
On the day of Badr, he supported the religion victoriously
and through Ibn Badr, he exalted wit and letters.
And the son of Badr ennobled elegance and literature
يَمَّمْتُI sought بدرَBadr; the full moon بنيthe sons of بدرٍBadr فماand did not انتسبتdeclare lineage
ألفاظهُhis words ليَto me لكنْbut وجهُهُhis face انتسباdeclared lineage
I sought Badr, the full moon of Banu Badr; no lineage was disclosed
I aimed for Badr the son of Badr's clan but did not inherit it
by his words to me, but his face proclaimed it.
His words belonged to me but his face belonged to his lineage
لاقيتهُI met him وأناand I المملوءُthe one filled منwith غضبanger
علىat الزمانthe times فسرَّىand dispelled عنِّيَfrom me الغضباthe anger
I met him while I was filled with anger
I met him while I was full of anger
at the times, and he dispelled my anger.
At the times, so he relieved my anger
فلوso if حلفتَyou swore لماwould not كُذّبتhave been called a liar حينئذٍthen
أنِّيthat I هناكthere لقيتُmet العُجْمَthe non-Arabs والعرباand the Arabs
So had you sworn, you would not then have been called a liar,
If you swore you would not be doubted then
that there I had met both non-Arabs and Arabs.
That I met there the non-Arabs and the Arabs

He gave, excelling in generosity, and added for me
He helped me, did good in helping, and followed me
praise, then followed it with thanks—and no wonder.
With praise, and supported me with gratitude, and that is no wonder
اللَّهGod يكلؤُهُguards him واللَّهand God يُؤنسهُkeeps him company
فإنهfor he بمعاليهِthrough his lofty qualities قدindeed اغترباhas become a stranger
May God guard him, and may God keep him company,
May God protect him and may God give him companionship
for his lofty qualities have made him a stranger.
For by his nobility he became a stranger
