ياO ابنson الوزيرthe vizier لعاتبٍfor a reproacher مُتعتَّبُgrounds for reproach
On Jullanar and her sister Dubsiyya.
In Jullanar and her sister Dubsiyya
O son of the vizier, a reproacher has grounds for reproach.
O son of the minister, for one who is reproached
أحضرتمونيyou brought me جُلَّنَارَJullanar وأُحضرتْand was brought in
دبسيَّةُDubsiyya الكبرىthe elder لغيريَfor someone other than me تُجنَبُis led along
You brought me Jullanar, while brought in was
You brought me Jullanar, and Dubsiyya the elder was brought
Dubsiyya the elder, led along for someone else.
For another, to be shunned by me
فعتبتُso I reproached عتباًa reproach خلتI thought فيهin it كفايةًsufficiency
ثمthen انصرفتI turned إلىto التيthat which هيit أصوبُsounder
So I reproached you with reproach I thought sufficient,
So I reproached in a way that sufficed
then turned to the sounder course.
Then I turned to what was more proper
فكظمتُso I swallowed بالإغْضاءby looking away كلَّevery مُغِصَّةٍchoking grief
منfrom ظُلمكمyour injustice ووهبتُand I forgave ماwhat لاnot يُوهَبُis forgiven
So, by looking away, I swallowed every choking grief
I suppressed with forbearance every vexation
from your injustice, and forgave what cannot be forgiven.
From your injustice, and forgave what is not usually forgiven
وظننتand I thought توبتكمyour repentance نَصوحاًsincere بعدهاafter it
ولقدand indeed يُخالَفis contradicted منone who يَظُنُّsupposes ويَحسبُand reckons
And I thought your repentance after that sincere;
And I thought your repentance afterwards was sincere
yet one who supposes and reckons may well be proved wrong.
Though one who assumes may be wrong in their judgement
فجرىso there befell عليَّupon me بظلمكمthrough your injustice منfrom خُرَّمٍKhurram
يومٌa day كماas علمknew الإلهُGod عَصْبصبُgrievously harsh
So, through your injustice, there befell me from Khurram
But your injustice brought upon me a day
a day of dire hardship, as God knows.
Of bitterness, as God knows, Sabusbu
يومٌa day يُسمَّىis named حينwhen يكنىis given a byname غيرُهُanother besides it
لاno بلrather يُكَنَّىis given a byname غيرُهُanother besides it ويُلَقَّبُand is given an epithet
A day named outright, when another is given a byname—
A day called thus when another is nicknamed
no, rather, another is given both a byname and an epithet.
Rather, another is nicknamed and titled
وحَدَتْand spurred on شَمولٌShamul بالشَّمولwith wine لمعشرfor a company
غيريother than me وفيماand in what دونless than ذلكthat مَغْضبُcause for anger
And Shamul, with wine, spurred on a company
Encompassing generosity for a group
other than me; even less than that is cause for anger.
Other than me, and in less than that, anger
ياسادتيO my masters ماليwhy am I أذادُam driven away عنfrom التيthe one whom
أبغيI desire وأُسعَطand am dosed through the nose بالتيwith the one whom أتجنَّبُI shun
O my masters, why am I driven away from the one
My lords, why should I be averse to her
I desire, and dosed through the nose with the one I shun?
Whom I desire, yet persist with one I shun
أمشَاهديis my presence يومَon the day of الرَّفيهةease تُحتمَىis shunned
ومشَاهديand my presence يومَon the day of الكريهةhardship تُخْطَبُis courted
Is my presence on a day of ease shunned,
Witnesses on the day of the foolish one being coveted
while my presence on a day of hardship is courted?
And witnesses on the day of the hated one being sought
ذكَّرتمونيyou reminded me بالتيby what أسديتُمُyou bestowed
مثلاًa proverb لمثليfor someone like me لاno محالةَescape يُضربُis applied
By what you have bestowed, you have reminded me
You reminded me with one I bestowed
of a proverb inevitably applied to one like me:
An example surely being set for the like of me
أَإِذاis it when تكونُthere is كريهةٌa calamity أُدعىَI am summoned لهاfor it
وإذاand when يحاسُis mixed الحَيْسُhays (dates, ghee, and curds) يُدعىis invited جُندُبُJundub
Am I summoned when a calamity comes,
That when she is hated I should be called to her
while Jundub is invited when hays is mixed?
And when shame is sensed, a beetle is called
