هل أشتكي دهري وأنت صديقي
Oh, would that I knew, with misfortunes so many:
Oh how I wish my poetry and troubles abound
Should I complain of my fate when you are my friend?
Shall I complain of my fate, and you my friend?
وشكايتيand my complaint الأيامthe days دونless than شكايتيmy complaint
وشكايتي الأيام دون شكايتي
إنif خاننيbetrays me عندat النهوضrising رفيقيmy companion
إن خانني عند النهوض رفيقي
And my complaint against the days is less than my complaint
My complaints of days without complaining of you
If my companion betrays me when I rise.
If my companion betrays me when I stand up

بيني وبينك أن تُضيع شقيقي
Indeed, I seek refuge in the bond made firm
I take refuge in the bond tied fast
Between you and me, lest you neglect my brother,
Between you and I, do not lose my brother

Or time wrongs him from contentment
Or me—while you are his path and mine.
Or between me and you his path and mine
