Oh, would that I knew—if you were asked, after

reciting my praise of you to someone who heard it,

"What did you give its author in return?"

would you find any latitude in your reply?

No—for if you told the truth, you would have

admitted that you are the stingiest of misers.

And if you lied, that would be the worse of the two:

    falsehood combines sin and degradation.

And if you took comfort in silence, there would be no

respite for you there from the noble-hearted's reproach.

Do you think you make them imagine, when they ask

and you fall silent, something that leaves you blameless?

No; rather, they would all know

that you had indeed followed the paths of deceit.

Your tongue kept your secret, yet there listened

keen minds, attentive to what you muttered.

Thus, too, the minds of those endowed with reason

are privy to the secrets of the ignorant.

I had already repented of satire; but if

the base wish it, I shall restore it to youthful vigor.
