ياOh هلcan يُخلَّدُbe made everlasting منظرٌa sight حَسنُbeautiful
لممتَّعfor one granted enjoyment أوor مَخْبرٌan inward nature حسنُfine
Oh, can a beautiful sight last forever
O beauty of the graceful sight, is it immortalized?
for one who enjoys it—or a fine inward nature?
Or of the pleasant news, is it immortalized?
أمor هلcan يطيبُbe pleasant لمقلةٍto an eye وَسنٌdrowsiness
فيقرُّso it settles فيهاin it ذلكthat الوسنُdrowsiness
Or can drowsiness be sweet to an eye
Or does the tooth delight in the gum that cherishes it?
and that drowsiness remain within it?
So that gum cherishes that tooth forever?
أمor هلcan يُبَتُّbe severed لذاهبٍfor one departing قَرَنٌa binding cord
يوماًone day فيُوصَلthen be rejoined ذلكthat القَرَنُbinding cord
Or can a bond be severed for one departing
Or is a companion mourned for by one who has lost their companion?
one day, and that bond then be rejoined?
One day so they are reunited, that companion?
كمhow many مِنَّةٍa favor للدهرof Time كدَّرهاit clouded it
لمnot تصفُwere unclouded منهfrom it ولاnor لهto its credit المِننُthe favors
How many of Time's favors it has clouded!
How many favors of fate soured,
No favors from it, or credited to it, remain untainted.
That did not describe it, neither for it nor from it, the blessings?
ماhas not زالceased يكسوناclothing us ويسلبناand stripping us
حتىuntil نظلَّwe remain وشُكرناand our gratitude إحَنُgrudges
It has never ceased clothing us and stripping us,
It kept clothing us and robbing us,
until we are left with grudges for gratitude.
Until we remained thankless and saddened.
فمتىso whenever أراكit shows you بصرفِهِthrough its changes زِيَناًadornments
فهِيَthen they are الزخارفُthe baubles منهfrom it لاnot الزِّينُtrue adornments
So whenever, through its changes, it shows you adornments,
So when do I see you turn away from it, adorned?
they are its baubles, not true adornments.
For they are ornaments from it, not beauty itself.
يكفيكit suffices you أنthat لاno وجدَgrief مُدَّخَرٌheld in reserve
أبداًever وألاand that no دمعtears يُختزَنُare stored away
It suffices you that no grief is held in reserve,
It suffices you that no hoard was found,
ever, and that no tears are stored away.
Ever, nor collected tears.
أبُنَيّO my little son إنكindeed you والعزاءَand solace معاًtogether
بالأمسyesterday لُفَّwas wrapped عليكماaround you both كفنُa shroud
My little son, you and solace together—
My son, you and consolation together,
yesterday one shroud was wrapped around you both.
Yesterday were wrapped in a shroud.
فإذاso when تناولتُI reach for العزاءsolace أبىprevents
نَيْلِيهmy attaining it أنthat قدalready ضمَّهhas enfolded it الجُننُthe grave
So when I reach for solace, I am denied
So when I reached for consolation it refused,
attainment of it, for the grave has enfolded it.
To let me attain it, for madness had embraced it.
أبُنيّO my little son إنif أحزنْI grieve عليكfor you فليthen I have
فيin أنthat فقدتُكI lost you ساعةًan hour حزنُsorrow
My little son, if I grieve for you, I have
My son, if I grieve for you, then for me,
sorrow in losing you for a single hour.
In losing you, there is but an hour’s grief.
وإنand if افتقدتI lack الحُزنsorrow مفتقِداًbereft of
لُبِّيmy reason لفقدِكthrough losing you للحَرِيsurely fitting القَمِنُappropriate
And if I lack sorrow, bereft
And if seeking grief, seeking,
of reason at your loss, that is surely fitting and right.
For your loss, my mind has gone insane.
بلrather لاnot إخالI think شجاكgrief for you تَعْدَمُهlacks it
روحٌa soul ألمَّhas visited بهاupon it ولاnor بَدنُa body
Rather, I do not think grief for you is absent from
No, your pain does not vanish without
a soul it has visited, or from any body.
A soul pained by it, nor a body.
تاللَّهby God لاnot تنفكyou cease to be ليto me شجناًa sorrow
يمضيpasses الزمانtime وأنتand you ليto me شجنُa sorrow
By God, you will never cease to be a sorrow to me;
By Allah, never ceasing a yearning for me,
time passes, and you remain my sorrow.
Time passes, yet you remain my yearning.
والآنand now حينwhen ظعنتyou departed عنfrom وطنيmy homeland
سمجbecame repugnant المقامstaying وطابand became pleasant ليto me الظَّعنُdeparture
And now, since you departed from my homeland,
And now, when I despaired of my homeland,
staying has grown repugnant, and departure sweet to me.
Residence soured, and wandering was sweet to me.
ماnot أصبحتhas become دنيايَmy world ليfor me وطناًa homeland
بلrather حيثwhere دارُكyour dwelling عنديَto me الوطنُthe homeland
My world is no longer a homeland to me;
My world is no longer a homeland to me,
rather, where your dwelling is, there is my homeland.
But where your house is, to me, that is home.

There is, by day, now that I have lost you, no
In daylight, having lost you, I have no
cheer, nor any rest for me at night.
Company, nor at night, any rest.
ياO حسرتاmy sorrow فارقتنيyou left me فَنناًas a branch
غضاًtender ولمand had not يُثمرborne fruit ليَfor me الفننُthe branch
Alas, you left me as a branch,
Oh what sorrow, the arts left me,
still tender, and the branch had borne no fruit for me.
Green, and did not bear fruit for me, the arts.
ولقدand indeed تُسلّيconsoles القلبَthe heart ذُكرتُهits remembrance
أنِّيthat I بأنto ألقاكmeet you مرتَهَنُam bound
And indeed the heart is consoled by the thought
And remembering you comforts the heart
that I am bound to meet you.
That I will meet you again pledged.
أولادناour children أنتمyou لناfor us فِتنٌtrials
وتفارقونand you depart فأنتمُthen you are مِحنُafflictions
Our children, you are trials to us;
Our children, you are temptations for us,
and when you depart, you are afflictions.
And you leave, so you are tribulations.
لهفيmy yearning علىfor سبقcoming first المنيةdeath بيwith me
لوif بيعit were sold لمnot يوجدbe found لهfor it ثمنُa price
My longing for death to have taken me first—
My craving for the precedence of death over me,
were that for sale, no price could be found for it.
If offered for sale, would not find a price.
ياO عاذليmy reproacher فيin مثلthe like of نائبتيmy calamity
تُلْفَىare found دموعُthe tears العينof the eye تُمْتَهنُfreely spent
O you who reproach me: in a calamity like mine,
Oh my blamer, in the like of my affliction,
the eye's tears are freely spent.
The tears of the eyes are hired weeping.
فدعِso leave off الملامblame فإننيfor I am رجلa man
عَدلٌupright علىover العبراتthe tears مؤتمَنُentrusted
So leave off blame, for I am a man
So cease blaming, for I am a man
upright, entrusted with tears.
Just, entrusted with tears.
أنفقتُI spent دمعيmy tears فيin مَواضعهtheir proper places
لاneither الوَكسُloss يلحقُنيbefalls me ولاnor الغَبنُunfair dealing
I have spent my tears where they belong;
I spent my tears in their proper places,
neither loss nor unfair dealing overtakes me.
No shame comes to me, nor loss.
أبكانيَmade me weep ابنيmy son إذwhen فُجعتI was bereaved بهof him
لمdid not تُبكِنيmake me weep الأطلالruined dwellings والدِّمنُand old campsite traces
My son made me weep when I was stricken by his loss;
My son made me weep when I was bereaved of him,
ruined dwellings and old campsite traces did not make me weep.
Not ruins nor shelter made me weep.
وعكَفْتُand I kept vigil بالقبرby the grave المحيطenclosing بهhim
فاعذِرْso pardon me فلاfor it is no صنمٌidol ولاnor وثنُgraven image
And I kept vigil by the grave enclosing him;
And I took refuge at his encompassing tomb,
so pardon me: it is neither idol nor graven image.
So excuse me, neither an idol nor stones.
