O you whose nobility stands alone,

and whose bounty is a rain cloud pouring down,

and O you who shone like the midmorning sun,

so we now find our way to him through him:

By that beautiful face of yours, take it as your model

in your dealings with me, and hear what is dictated.

For from a face like it, deeds are taken down

by a generous man's hand, which goes forth seeking dictation.

Do you sway amid fresh green foliage,

while your servant has no shade in it?

And he has committed no sin whose form you see

before your eyes; nor is his like one who slips.

So if you say, 'He fell short in what was incumbent

upon him,' then he is remiss, and he is at fault.

Yet your pardon is a fitting pardon,

when your stature is so exalted.

And I give you cause for doubt, O you through whom

I ward off the misfortunes that may overshadow me.

Yet your opinion of me remains

    your worst opinion—or I am held of little account;

and this lasts until we offer what leaves you no doubt

that, with it, I shall not go astray.

Then you will be sure that I am your loyal friend,

that I love you and hold you in reverence.

When you bestow a kindness on me,

you see into my hidden gratitude.

And can there coexist in those with untainted hearts

the memory of a gracious deed and rancor?

    فحتَّى متى سادتي لا تُبلُّ

    I suffer wasting sickness through your delay;

so how long, my lords, must it go unhealed?

And neglecting someone like me is unlawful,

and God detests what is unlawful.

Have you truly consented that wealth

be your servant's enemy, and poverty his friend?

And that whenever a man is honored,

I have someone to wrong me and someone to abase me?

Yet your bounty floods those who seek it,

and your sword never dulls against an oppressor.

Is your bounty powerless to aid one servant,

while you alone shoulder the affairs of mankind?

    حِ واعلم بأني قراحٌ مُغِلُّ

    The seed I need is little, like seed for an open field;

and know that I am a fruitful field.

I yield the praise that you know

is never paltry, even in its smallest measure.

So bestow on me what will safeguard me,

for your precinct bears fruit and gives shade.

And strengthen your friend; for what is ugly—

utterly ugly—is a friend brought low.

And do not reproach me for humbling myself,

though bereft of kinship—for affection is kinship.

And your bounty is the most welcome intercessor before

you, when a tiresome intercessor grows unwelcome.

When you are cheerful, meeting a petition

with a face that the caller greets with joyful cries,

then I make bold with you, having no

    means of boldness—bold, and emboldened.

And why not, when your courtyard is spacious

for a noble guest, and the weary traveler makes his mount kneel beside you?

You see praise spread musk that wafts its fragrance,

and wealth fold away flesh that rots.

And you value my gratitude, which is deemed little,

above your bounty, which is never small.
