يا من يتيهُ بموعدٍ لم يقضِهِ
ذُقْtaste غِبَّthe aftermath of صولةِthe onslaught of شاعرٍa poet لمْdid not تُرضِهِsatisfy him
ذُقْ غِبَّ صولةِ شاعرٍ لمْ تُرضِهِ
O you who swagger over a promise you have not fulfilled,
O you who wanders lost without fulfilling your tryst
Taste the aftermath of the onslaught of a poet you have not satisfied.
Taste the estrangement of a poet you did not appease
قصدتaimed at سهامُthe arrows of الشعرpoetry غُرَّةَthe brow of مالِهِhis wealth
قصدت سهامُ الشعر غُرَّةَ مالِهِ
فأصَبْنَso they struck دونshort of المالthe wealth غُرةَthe brow of عِرضِهِhis honor
فأصَبْنَ دون المال غُرةَ عِرضِهِ
The arrows of verse aimed at the brow of his wealth;
The arrows of poetry aimed at his wealth
But, short of his wealth, they struck the brow of his honor.
But struck, instead of his wealth, his honor
ماnot مرpassed منany يومday عليهover him وليلةٍand a night
ما مر من يوم عليه وليلةٍ
إلاexcept وبعضُand a part of غلامهhis servant-boy فيinside بعضِهِa part of him
إلا وبعضُ غلامه في بعضِهِ
No day or night passed over him
No day or night has passed over him
Without part of his servant-boy being inside part of him.
Without some part of him conflicting with another
