O you who have come to waver between hope and fear

Of me, and whose survival suffices my soul.

Is not Dubsiyya the Elder in your presence,

Urging the cups along to Ishaq's makhuri rhythm?

So I am not wanted—yes, I am, if fate plots against you

Through Julnar; may a protector shield me from your indifference.

Praise be to God: I am not invited to your hunt

Except when the hunt amounts to failure.

May I always be summoned for someone afflicted, to help him

Against adversity, not be a diversion for one who longs.

Is there any way to renew your affection?

And can anything be renewed after wearing out?

No wonder: the boughs may grow leafy,

Just as they turn bare after leafing.

O face of a generous man whose cheerfulness has changed,

The sun will never be beautiful unless it shines.

    I complain to God of injustice that will not lift;

I keep receiving from it the worst of provisions.

It has clouded over me, with neither shade nor silver—

The sky of a patron who gives shade, sunshine, and drink.
