ياO مَنْone who يعيبُdisparages لديناin our presence الراحَwine مجتهداًdiligently
أسأتَyou did ill قولاًin speech وقدand indeed أحسنْتَyou did well فيin العملِaction
O you who diligently disparage wine in our presence,
O you who find fault with our land as zealous,
You spoke ill, yet acted well.
You spoke ill though did well in deed,
تركْتَهاyou gave it up مُؤثراًgiving preference للأكرمينَto the noblest بهاwith it
وعبتَهاand you disparaged it عيبَfaultfinding ذيone possessed of جهلٍignorance وذيand one possessed of خطلِfoolishness
You gave it up, favoring the noblest with it,
You left it preferring the most generous in it,
And disparaged it as the ignorant and foolish do.
And found fault in it, a fault of ignorance and folly,
فبُؤْso come away بحمدٍwith praise وذمّand blame تستحقُّهماyou deserve them both
كماjust as خَلَطْتَyou mixed الذيthat which أسْدَيتَyou bestowed بالعذلِwith reproach
So come away with the praise and blame you deserve,
So make amends with praise and blame you deserve,
Just as you mixed what you bestowed with reproach.
As you have mingled what you poured with honey and vinegar,
ماnot كنتَyou were إلاexcept كساقٍlike a cupbearer خاضَstirred مِجْدَحُهhis stirring stick
شوباًan admixture منof الصابِbitter sap فيinto شربٍa draught منof العسلِhoney
You were only like a cupbearer whose stirring stick mixed
You were but as one who waded into his glory
Bitter sap into a draught of honey.
Adding some bitterness to a drink of honey.
