    O you—whenever your father's eye sees you

among men, he fends them off with excuses.

I swear by God: had you been a son of mine,

I would have put you nowhere but in underground pits.

You bear a face that God has clothed in His curse,

as though its snout were the snout of a pig.

And you gained no benefit from the bureau,

so far as we know, except unrolling scrolls.

You made your back a sheet of paper, used in turn

there by the pens of master scribes.

God, what sweeping strokes and cramped writing go on there,

and what heavy Riyāsī script and fine penmanship!

And they have no desire for your foul-smelling arse,

unless you bribe them for it with dinars.
