O trees between al-Rasīs and ʿĀqil,

I have bestowed my censure on you, speaking truth, not lies.

You grew moist with dew but put forth no leaves, and you bear no fruit.

So be a target for calamities to strike.

For there is no shade in you against noon’s scorching heat,

Nor is there any benefit in you for a fruit-gatherer or wood-gatherer.

And in you, despite your withholding all good,

Are thorns with no roost for a returning bird.

And I reckon that among those thorns, without a doubt, are

Vipers; so may you never be watered by the clouds’ downpour!
