O sworn ally of generosity, release abundant praises,
O dew commander, unleash abundant praises,
captives held with me, whose time for release has come.
I have imprisoned eulogies that have come time to be set free,
ولمand not أحتَبِسهاI withhold them إذwhen حبستَyou withheld مثوبتيmy reward
لأنbecause مديحاًa eulogy لمnot يجدfind بعدُyet مَمْدحاgrounds for praise
I did not withhold them when you withheld my reward
And I would not have detained them had you not detained my reward,
because a eulogy had not yet found grounds for praise,
For no praise after yours could find praise,

nor because some clumsily composed verse in my poetry
No embellished verse in my poem did I fear
made me fear scrutiny at its recitation.
Might be scrutinized when recited,

Nor was there any crookedness in my words that I knew of,
And nothing I said was deviance I knew
so that I postponed them until they could be straightened and corrected.
So I postponed it until it be rectified and corrected,

Rather, I have a soul tenderly concerned for you,
But my soul cares for you deeply,
fearing that your enemies may find a fault in you,
Fearing the rancor of enemies in you a kindling,

when their glances, at my recitation, call as witnesses
When their glances bear witness at my recital,
the signs of grief that speaks out if I feign muteness,
Evidence of passion though more eloquent if contested.

and conveys to them all that you already know,
So give them all you know as solace,
in plain sight: if my tongue speaks obliquely, it speaks openly.
When my tongue irrigates, wells forth.

There the envious aim their blades
There the envious fold their lips,
at an honor they long to see wounded.
Lest they behold perfection they aspire to mar.

Then, by my life, you are reproached for a reward you delayed,
You would win, by my life, reward you wind,
and you are a man whom reproachers blame for generosity.
While you give freely the asker implores you gift.

Whenever a praise-poem you have wronged is recited,
Whensoever praise you deemed miserly given,
it becomes more satirical against you the more laudatory it is.
More calumnious the better it flattered.

When a man composes beautiful praise, its beauty becomes
If one praises well his goodness reflects,
ugliness for its wearer if he behaves disgracefully.
On the wearer ugliness if he uglier.

Someone smiled at praise of a man of noble character,
Smiling at praise one noble spurned,
but when he learned that the man had not rewarded it, he scowled.
Seeing fine deeds met with wicked acts.

He saw a good deed repaid with an evil one,
Rejoicing though to magnify the other, extolling, hallowing.
and exclaimed in astonishment, 'There is no god but God!' and 'Glory be to God!'
I wrong you reciting withheld praise,

I would betray you if I recited my praise of you unadorned,
And expose you to blamers morrow and eves,
and expose you to reproachers at evening and at morning.

distressed by what you bestow and I offer, plunged into grief.

through my efforts, until it was removed from your shelter.

A soul's affection, which I mingled with sincere counsel—
You deserve to be loved and counseled indeed.
and you deserve to be loved and counseled,
Though I meet denial for what I seek,

O clouds whose shade pavilions the world,

O rain whose shade stretches out
Watering freely, flooding copiously.
as a canopy over the world, and which pours in abundant torrents!
O meadow shaken, its plants early fertile,

And O pasture whose growth sways,
Burgeoning, thriving lushly, vivaciously.
whose fertility comes at dawn and again at evening!
I would pardon you if a sky clouded over,

I would excuse you, were it a sky whose
Or a garden swooned aromatically.
clouds had dispersed, or a meadow that had withered.

But it is watering whose full draught I am denied,
Whose channel avert, refuse, deny.
while its rain cloud lowers its drooping breasts;
And habitual ingrates, their pasture I protect,

and pastures of bounty from whose lush growth I am barred,
Now wilderness, sadness, their plain, their theater.
though their plains and rugged ground have become grazing land.
I presented myself to the critics, your sea full,

فلماbut when أردنthey sought الوِرْدَthe watering place ألفَينَthey found ضَحضَحاshallow water
I came forward for my little herds, while your sea was surging;
When they sought pearls, only to bubble, seethe.
but when they sought the watering place, they found shallows.
If the critics of others found no mirage at hand,
فلوso if لمnot تَردcome to drink at أذوادُlittle herds غيريof others غِمارهits depths

Had others' little herds not come to drink in its depths,
I'd say a mirage shimmers clearly now manifest.
I would have called it a mirage gleaming on the uplands.
What a sea where I found no place to drink,
فياso O لكfor you بحراًa sea لمnot أجدI found فيهin it مشرباًa drinking place
وإنeven though كانis غيريsomeone else واجِداًfinding فيهin it مَسْبحاa place to swim
What a sea you are! I have found no drinking place in it,
Though others plunge in it finding ample drink.
though others find a place to swim in it.
I will boast when God gives me cause for boasting,

I shall boast, since God has given me cause for pride,
And crow when God gives me cause for crowing.
and exult, since God has given me cause for exultation.
My praise is Moses' staff, for with it I struck

My praise is Moses' staff, for
The sea of generosity, gushing, flowing!
I struck the sea of generosity with it, and it turned shallow.
Would that I knew, if I struck Mount Safa thus,

Would that I knew: if I struck smooth rock with it,
Whether it would send me streams, tranquil, glowing.
would it bring forth flowing streams from the rock for me?

Like that staff which laid the seabed bare and dry,
Cleaving eyes in rocks, cascading, pouring.
and split open gushing springs in the stones.
I will praise some misers, perhaps then

إنif اطّرَدَholds consistently المقياسُthe analogy أنto يتَسمّحاbecome generous
I shall praise one of the misers; perhaps,
The measure consistent, they may relax, relent.
if the analogy holds, he will become generous.

You have power; deal gently, Abu al-Saqr, for
When the noble rule, rejoice, exult!
when one like you masters free men, he deals gently.

Accept my praise with bounty, truly accepting it,
Or reject them, denying manifest.
or cast it aside with a clear refusal.
It is not right one you reject should despair

For one who has extolled you does not deserve to be denied
Neither hope if he be most sincere.
both a gift and despair, if despair would bring greater ease.

Wondrous you spurn while I persevere.
It was strange that I should brim while you ran dry.

Another with plain wool cloak you apparel.
at another I clothe you in striped fine cloth.

I gave you pure praise, for you deserve it pure,
Though now with reproach assailed, mired.
though it has now been watered down with reproach.
I have not fully praised you, have I toiled for that?

Suppose I have not attained a degree of praise
Yes, a man's striving necessitates his due,
that satisfies you—have I not toiled hard toward it?
Even if his purpose went astray, amiss.

Indeed; a man's striving establishes his due,
My intercessor has come to you, his name you know
even if he misses the goal toward which he strove.
That you may return him, by it addressed, invoked.

My intercessor has come to you; you already know his name,
so you may send him back called by it and by Aflah—'successful.'
