ياO سَيِّداًa lord غيرnot مظلومwronged بتَسْويدِby being made a lord
O son of the two viziers and son of the proud lords,
O son of two viziers and son of noble hunters
O lord, rightly accorded lordship!
O master not wronged by blackening

Badr, granted a star by the One who granted him you,
A full moon endowed with a star that endowed him with perfection
O house of Wahb, sons of the illustrious and glorious.
O family of Wahb, sons of courageous glory

You spread your blessings to him across branches
You have granted him blessings from you in diverse affairs
Of various affairs—even in the births of children.
Even in newborns

When your two stars followed one another in sequence,
When two stars aligned for you in sequence
A star came to him, guiding night travelers through the deserts.
And a star guided the wanderers in the desert reached him
وكانand he had been دهراًfor an age عنfrom الأذْكارmale offspring مُنْغَلِقاًclosed off

And long had he been closed off from male offspring,
And he had been closed off from remembrances for a time
So your good omen proved one of the finest keys.
So your omen was one of the best symbols
طَرَّقْتَyou paved the way بابنيكwith your two sons لابْنfor a son جاءهwho came to him سُرُحاًwith ease
واليُمْنُand good fortune صاحبmaster of تَطْريقopening paths وتمْهيدِand smoothing the way
With your two sons you paved the way for a son who came to him with ease,
You knocked with your two sons for a son who came freely
And good fortune is master of opening and smoothing the way.
And good fortune is the companion of knocking and paving
كماjust as تُطَرِّقُyou pave the way بالآراءwith ideas تَقْدَحُهاyou kindle them

As you pave the way with ideas you kindle
As you ignite opinions with his opinion
With his judgment, and so receive all sound guidance.
So they are received as all righteousness

Indeed, you and he were joined by destiny,
You and he were brought together in a predestined way
And praise be to God—in every form of praise.
Thanks be to God, varieties of praises
أضحىhas become التَّلاؤمthe harmony فيin الخيْراتgood deeds بينكماbetween you two
مثْلَlike التلاؤمthe harmony بينbetween الرأسthe head والجيدِand the neck
Your harmony in good deeds has become
The harmony in virtues between you two
Like the harmony between head and neck.
Is like the harmony between head and neck
فالجَدّso good fortune بالجدِّwith good fortune مُؤْتَمٌّfollowing the lead يُماثِلُهmatching it
والرأْيُand judgment بالرأيwith judgment فيin نقْضrefutation وتَوْكيدِand confirmation
So fortune follows fortune, matching it,
Seriousness matches seriousness
And judgment accords with judgment in refuting and affirming.
And opinion matches opinion in refuting and confirming

May your joint affairs forever remain united,
The unity of your cooperation remains unshaken
And your enemies' affairs remain scattered.
As does the disunity of enemies' affairs
وكلُّكُمْand all of you فأدامso may perpetuate اللّهGod نِعْمَتَهُHis blessing

And for you all, may God make His blessing endure,
And may God prolong all your bounty
Perpetually, amid honor and support.
With continuation between honor and support

For you all, O sons of Wahb, possess generosity
For you are, O sons of Wahb, noble men
Ever recurring in lofty deeds, time and again.
Echoed in glories, what an echo!
منwhoever كانis أهْلاًworthy لإمتاعٍof lasting enjoyment بدوْلَتِهof his rule
فأنْتُمُthen you أهْلُworthy of إمتاعlasting enjoyment وتخليدِand perpetuity
If anyone deserves that his rule be long enjoyed,
Whoever is worthy of enjoying his rule
Then you deserve lasting enjoyment and perpetuity.
You are worthy of enjoyment and eternity
أصلحتُمyou set right الدينreligion والدنياand worldly life بيُمْنِكُمُthrough your good fortune
منfrom بعدafter ماthat طالlasted long إفسادُthe corruption المناكيدِof the ill-fated
You have set religion and worldly life right through your good fortune,
You have reformed religion and world with your good fortune
After the ill-fated had long wrought corruption.
After the corruption of schemers had lasted long
فالملْكso the realm فيin روضَةٍa garden منكمْthanks to you وفيand at عُرُسٍa wedding feast

So the realm, thanks to you, is in a garden and at a wedding feast,
The kingdom is in a meadow from you and in a wedding
And religion, thanks to you, is at Friday worship and a festival.
And religion in a congregation from you and in a holiday
لاdo not تَحْمَدُونيpraise me أنbecause جَوَّدْتُI perfected مَدْحَكُمُpraise of you
فإنماfor only قامrose تَشْييدٌa building بِتوطيدِon a firm foundation
Do not praise me for excelling in my praise of you,
Do not praise me for generously praising you
For the building rose only on a firm foundation.
For construction has been set up through consolidation
جوَّدْتُI excelled فيكمin praising you كماjust as أجْوَدْتُgave generously أيدِيَكُمْyour hands
ماwhat حَمْدُpraise مُتْبِعِfor one following أَجْوادٍthe generous بِتَجوِيدِwith excellence
I excelled in praising you, just as your hands excelled in giving;
I was generous about you as your hands were generous
What praise is due to one who follows the generous with fine praise?
What praise of a follower with excellent delivery?
تُحكَىare recounted المكارمُnoble deeds عنكمْabout you وهيthough they are شاهدةٌplainly present
ليسَتْthey are not بغَيبunseen ولاnor تُحصىcounted بتعديدِby enumeration
Your noble deeds are recounted, though they are plain to see;
Virtues are recounted of you while witnessing
They are not hidden, nor can counting encompass them.
Not absent nor countable by numbering
وماand what use is حِكايةrecounting شيْءٍa thing لاno خَفاءobscurity بهabout it
جاءcame العيانُdirect sight فألْوَىand did away بالأسانِيدِwith chains of transmission
And what need is there to recount a thing with nothing hidden about it?
But narrating something unconcealed
Direct sight has come and swept away chains of transmission.
Reality came so narratives were discarded
بلrather إنماonly قلتُI spoke قَوْليmy words فيكُمُabout you مِقَةًout of affection
مِنِّيfrom me لكُمْfor you قبلbefore شُكْرِيmy gratitude للمَرافيدِfor gifts
Rather, I spoke my words about you only out of affection
Rather, I spoke my words about you from me
From me for you, before my gratitude for gifts.
Out of my devotion before thanking the benefactors
لاَdo not تَحْسَبُونيthink me لشيءfor anything غيْرِother than أنفُسِكُمْyour own selves
أُغْرَىI am impelled بتجديدِto renewing مَدْحpraise بعْدَafter تَجْدِيدِrenewal
Do not think that, for anything but your own selves,
Do not think me motivated by anything but yourselves
I am impelled to renew praise, time after time.
To be tempted to renew praise after renewal
لكنْbut كماjust as راقَتdelighted القُمْرِيَّthe ringdove جَنَّتُهُits garden
فظلَّso it kept يُتْبِعُfollowing تغْرِيداًa warble بتغْريدِwith a warble
But just as its garden delighted the ringdove,
But as the moonlit garden delighted him
So it kept following one warble with another.
So he kept following warble with warble
أحِبُّكمْI love you لحُلاكُمfor your graces لاnot لأنْعُمِكُمْfor your favors
كلّاnot at all وإنeven though أصبَحَتْthey have become غوْثَrelief for المجاهيدِthe hard-pressed
I love you for your graces, not for your favors.
I love you for your beauty not your bliss
Not at all, though they have become relief for the hard-pressed.
Even if it gives life to the holy warriors
ولينبَسِطْand let expand ليfor me عذريmy excuse إنif سألتُكُمُI ask you
فإنfor indeed دِينيَmy faith فيكمin you دينُa faith of توَحِيدِoneness
And let my excuse have full scope if I ask of you,
And let my excuse extend if I asked of you
For my faith in you is a faith of oneness.
For my debt to you is the debt of God's oneness
أفسدتُمُونِيَyou have spoiled me لاnot إفْسَادَa spoiling of تَنْحِيَةٍremoval
للخيرof good عنِّيَfrom me بلْbut إفسادa spoiling of تَعْويدِhabituation
You have spoiled me, not by removing
You have ruined me, not with aloof corruption
Good from me, but by making me accustomed to it.
But with corrupting me to goodness out of habit
وزهَّدتْنيand made me indifferent أياديكُمْyour favors وفضْلُكُمُand your bounty
فيtoward كلevery شيءthing سواهاother than them كلcomplete تزهيدِindifference
And your favors and bounty have made me indifferent
And your hands and favor made me ascetic
To everything but them—utterly indifferent.
To all else, every asceticism
تاللّهby God أسألُI ask قوماًa people غيركمother than you صَفَداًa gift
ياO أعْيُنَsprings الماءof water فيin دهْرan age الجلاميدِof boulders
By God, I will ask none but you for a gift,
By God, I would ask a people other than you to help me
O springs of water in an age of boulders!
O eyes of water in the age of frozen misers
وماand not اعْتَفَيْتُكُمُI sought your bounty إلاexcept بِتَجْربَةٍthrough experience
إذاwhen اعتفىsought bounty from القومَthe people عافيهِمْtheir supplicant بتقليدِon hearsay
And I sought your bounty only on the strength of experience,
And I never knew you well except by experience
While a people's supplicant seeks their bounty on hearsay.
When a people's healing is known through imitation
