يا ابن شهرَ الصيام أنت رقيعُ

يا ابن شهرَ الصيام أنت رقيعُ

ووضيع كما يكون الوضيعُ

ووضيع كما يكون الوضيعُ

O son of the month of fasting, you are a fool,

and base, as base men are.

كل شعر جهدت نفسك فيه

كل شعر جهدت نفسك فيه

وتكلفت نظمه تفقيع

وتكلفت نظمه تفقيع

Every verse you have strained yourself over

and labored to compose is mere wind.

لم يقله إلا موطِّنُ نفس

لم يقله إلا موطِّنُ نفس

أنه عند بثه مصفوع

أنه عند بثه مصفوع

No one would utter it unless he were prepared

to be slapped when he spreads it abroad.

فاترك الشعر وارتدع من قريب

فاترك الشعر وارتدع من قريب

واعدُ عنه إلى الذي تستطيع

واعدُ عنه إلى الذي تستطيع

So abandon poetry and desist without delay,

and turn from it to what you can do.

فستلهيك إبرة وخيوط

فستلهيك إبرة وخيوط

وإلى الأصل ما تؤول الفروع

وإلى الأصل ما تؤول الفروع

For a needle and threads will keep you busy,

and to the root the branches do return.
