O son of Buran—may you be made my ransom!

May you live in bliss and prosperity!

Bravo, bravo to your mother! How

her ambitions soar toward the heights!

She challenged Mary in chastity; and when

she had matched her, she aspired to Eve.

So she pursued fornication, vying with

Eve in the number of daughters and sons.

How can I lampoon a man both noble and base,

with one mother, but a succession of fathers?

How can I lampoon one wavering among disparate groups—

belonging neither to these nor to those?

How can I lampoon one in whom are gathered

all lineages, and in whom the tribes converge?

I merely relish your toil over

your poetry, O son of the uncircumcised baker-woman!

So I seem to see you in the murk

of thought, heaving sigh after sigh,

clamoring and raising dust, as if engaged in

something—alas, what a waste of that toil!

And I seem to see you crying, “Go on!”

goading your verse before the rabble,

drawing their ears to your lampoon of me,

with barking set to the music of howls.

They have lent an ear, while you bleat like a

he-goat, and they are silent as sheep.

So lampoon me! Your satire, to me, is merely

laughs that add to my happiness.

I am in bliss through them, and joy

fills my breast, while you are in anguish.

And it is impossible for the fortunate to be happy

throughout time except through the misery of the wretched.

I shall lampoon you as long as you are silent, and spare

you my lampoons when you lampoon me.

Nothing can save you from my hands but

that, even were you in the towers of heaven.

And I swear: I shall surely toy with

your limbs, now wounding, now killing outright,

    lampooning, praising, and taking

you as a diversion and a target for mockery.
