    ألا فاسلمْ كذاك من الخطوبِ

    O Salim, you are free of faults;

so may you likewise be safe from calamities!

And you have been made fair in character and form,

so you have become a lamp to hearts,

fulfilling a lovely honorific and name—

yet how many a designation is belied and false!

So, O moon that shines without setting,

and O sun that gives light without sunset!

Help me, Abu Hasan, help me!

For you are the one appealed to amid distress.

Protect me from reductions that have harmed

your servant, O springtime for the drought-stricken.

Why should I draw water from a pond

when you are the sea with its raging waves?

And how could you seek replenishment from irrigation channels

to drain them dry, when you never run dry?

Would a man of perfection diminish a kindness he bestowed

on a freeborn man guilty of no offense?

The conduct of a man of perfection rejects diminution,

one who rises above shortcomings and faults,

generous with long-held wealth, and in pursuing high honors

a tireless achiever—or one who surpasses such achievers.

I pray you are kept from thinning my armor,

for I am at war with my times.

And that armor is nothing but gifts

you lavish on me from your ever-giving hand.

With it I shield my vital spots from an age

hostile to freeborn men, ever ready to pounce.

So do not widen its entry at my armor's neck,

for fortresses may be entered through breaches.

Would you accept my being frightened, while you are my protector,

by acts akin to plunder, or by plunder itself?

And your protégé, when oppression overtakes a protégé,

is more unassailable than the soaring, hunting bird.

The reductions frighten me every month,

along with excruciating fatigue and ceaseless toil.

It is as though, whenever I recall them, I am shot

with an arrow lodged fast in my heart.

And the terrors of a sea are enough to frighten me,

leaving the mind lost because of them.

Fierce waves rise high in it,

as though their bulk were the bulk of black rockfields.

Whenever I am tossed upon their crests, I keep

proclaiming God's oneness for fear of sinking.

They toy with me in play that means business—

the humps on the back of a tireless, playful beast.

I ride it again each morning and evening,

though it is neither docile nor fit to ride.

How many a day I was shown death there

by the waves' madness in the south wind's frenzy!

I was shielded from its harm, after despair,

by God's protection—He who wards off calamities.

Whoever rejoices when a south wind blows,

I, by your life, take no joy in it.

But I have hated it for as long as I have existed,

as a slave hates a governor given to beating,

even if it greeted my nose with the garden's fragrance,

even if it brought every streaming shower.

    وإن هبت جَزعتُ من الهبوبِ

    When it dies down, I fear its rising;

and when it rises, I am terrified by its blowing.

And why not? It is an earthquake, but one

    for travelers on water, not travelers on the open plains;

and a turmoil that sweeps over people on land,

so all suffer its harm in various ways.

It raises a dust-cloud and raises a fever

in all water, fresh and brackish alike.

And it sweeps away reason when they answer one another—

the roars of its resounding, clamorous air.

By morning, all that each tract of earth has donned

    sways, reeling as drinkers sway.

And by evening, because of it, the palms and trees

lie mostly felled by the south wind.

That wind, then, is among the things I loathe,

by the All-Knower of things seen and unseen!

And among the things I desire is my livelihood's steady flow,

    and to be granted it by the brimming bucketful;

and to meet it smiling from afar,

both its cheeks clear of pallor.

What I desire is no obligation,

but should a man of duty bestow a favor,

mount the back of a noble deed made to kneel

for you to ride it; do not be fearful.

Those seeking your bounty direct you only

along a path from which you never turn aside.
