أعاذلO reproacher إنindeed شربَdrinking الراحِthe wine رشدٌsound judgment
أعاذل إن شربَ الراحِ رشدٌ
لأنbecause الراحَthe wine تأمرenjoins بالسماحِgenerosity
لأن الراحَ تأمر بالسماحِ
O reproacher, drinking wine is indeed sound judgment,
I blame not the drinking of wine for it leads to virtue
for wine enjoins generosity.
Since wine commands us to show forbearance
تقيناprotects us شُحَّstinginess أنفسناour souls وذاكمand that
تقينا شُحَّ أنفسنا وذاكم
إذاwhen ذُكِرis mentioned الفلاحsuccess منpart of الفلاحِsuccess
إذا ذُكِر الفلاح من الفلاحِ
It protects us from our souls’ stinginess—and that,
It protects us from the baseness of our souls and yours
when success is mentioned, is part of success.
