O radiant brow of eminence, and O its right eye,

And O the world's choicest, and O the essence of meaning,

Did you bring me to life yesterday, then put me to death

By rejecting and excluding me, though it is my right to be brought near?

And if I brought a dead man to life, I would love him,

For the beauty of the good I had wrought in him.

Does not the generous man love a dead man he has revived,

And let him reap from his sweet kindness all he gave him to reap?

I say to people who threatened me with a rebuff from you—

Though I never thought I would be tried by that, or afflicted so:

Shall I remain true to my pledge while Qasim breaks his,

And his favors end while my gratitude never ends?

You lie! By the One who grants him glory, his resolve

For justice and kindness is surely a resolve that cannot be bent.

O Qasim, if we gave you the full measure of your due,

You would bear no earthly name, nor any byname,

    And would be called only 'noble' and 'son of a noble man';

And the loftiest praise is your due, then loftier still,

Even though you are one I look to, whose loyal care has neglected

My share, while you have enriched others and given them possessions,

And banished me like the perpetrator of a grave offense,

Though once I used to be summoned and brought near.

Does he withhold from me the companionship I have cherished?

For my longing for it is Qays's longing for Lubna.

    أتمنعني قُوتي من العَرَضِ الأدنى

    Yes, I am denied what I am not worthy of;

Will you deny me my sustenance from the lowliest worldly goods?

I implore you not to wrong me, or lodge

The burning pain of rancor in ribs bent around love for you.

Have I skill? Then employ me for my skill,

For my sustenance; or, if not, provide for me among the chronically infirm.

And I do hope for both gains; unceasingly

Your favors come to the petitioner in succession, two by two.

May an index finger never cease to call on you for help,

    Nor a grateful man's little finger cease to be bent for you;

And may you always have those seeking refuge in your chambers:

One assailed by calamity, and one ravaged by chronic infirmity.

Hear, O servants of God: what ails this condition

I treat, which sickens with remedies for the ailing?

Must I suffer through one to whom, if I said, 'O best of those who walked

Upon the earth,' my heart would make no exception?

I seek protection for you from the injustice of one whose judgment was unjust,

So he made one group complain, and another rich.

    أمَا في اصطناع العُرْف مكرُمةٌ تبنى

    Suppose I am a man who offers a fruit-gatherer no gain;

Is there not honor to be built by bestowing kindness?

Ruin upon the world if your regard turns unfavorable,

For it is no pleasant home to dwell in.
