O praiser of rancor, contriving an analogy for it,
You have indeed taken a difficult path toward it.
لنwill not يَقْلِبَturn العيبthe fault زَيْناًinto beauty منwhoever يُزَيِّنُهُadorns it

Whoever adorns a fault will not turn it into beauty
Until he turns a very old man into a youth.

God has firmly twisted the cords of affairs together,
So you will never see any of those cords unraveled.

ساءwretched is الدفينُthe buried thing الذيwhich أمستْthey have become لهfor it جدثاa grave
O you who bury rancor in the twin folds of your breast,
Wretched is the buried thing for which they have become a grave.
الحقدُrancor داءٌa disease دويٌّdeep-seated لاno دواءَremedy لهُfor it
يَرِيconsumes الصُّدورَbreasts إذاwhen ماemphatic particle جمرهits embers حُرثاare stirred
Rancor is a deep-seated disease for which there is no cure.
It consumes breasts when its embers are stirred.

So seek healing from it through pardon or reproach;
For one with an ailing chest recovers only when he spits.

ولاand do not تكنbe لصغيرabout the trivial part of الأمرthe matter مكترثاconcerned

And seek vengeance for wrongs only when they are grave,
And do not concern yourself with trifling matters.

And forgiveness is nearer to piety, even if an offense
From an offender has wounded livers or torn them apart.

وَحْياًthrough revelation إلىto خيرthe best of منthose who صلَّىprayed ومنand those who بُعِثَاwere sent
Concerning forgiveness, it suffices you that God extolled it
Through revelation to the best of those who prayed and those who were sent.

I bear witness that, if you sinned, it would pain you
To meet your brother full of rancor, his breast grown harsh.

Then it would please you that he forget all offenses,
And that you find in him a gentle side.

So how can you praise a thing you would hate?
Reflect—may you be guided—and you will discern all that is confused.

Nor is it hidden which of all things is closest
To sound judgment, when an inquirer investigates.

وَلاَand do not تَمَنَّwish مُنَىthe wishes of طفلٍa child إذاwhen مرثاhe frolics
So return to truth while it is near and within easy reach,
And do not wish the wishes of a child at play.

For whoever hangs back from truth, and is forestalled
By a rival reaching it, has dust scattered and flung in his face.

Victory belongs to truth and to the one who advances its proof,
When one adversary kneels there before another.

For my part, when friends mingle their good deeds
With bad conduct, whether in earnest or in jest,

I then make my breast like a smelting vessel,
Which extracts the white silver, not the slag.

Nor do I make it like a basin, praising it
For retaining both pure water and foul.

Nor do I adorn my fault to make it palatable
To myself, nor do I utter calumny or obscenity.

حِنْثٌa breach of faith وإنْand even if هوhe لمdid not يحلفْswear فقدthen indeed حنثاhe has broken faith
Turning the faulty man away from his fault to beautify it
Is a breach of faith: even if he never swore, he has broken faith.

And a fault is two faults in one who does not condemn it;
If he feigns ignorance of his two faults, he has made them three.

Do not add to a fault for which you are reproached
The fault of deceit; your reputation will not improve.

Many a falsehood has gilded speech and made it deceptive
To minds—yet seldom has it endured.

What is ugly, however you embellish its exterior,
Returns to disarray in whatever was once put in order.
