أيُّهاO you الأعورُthe one-eyed man لِمْwhy جشَّمْتَنيyou burdened me
أيُّها الأعورُ لِمْ جشَّمْتَني
أنto أشُقَّI split open الرمسَthe grave عنfrom over والدتِكْyour mother
أن أشُقَّ الرمسَ عن والدتِكْ
O one-eyed man, why have you forced me
O one-eyed man, why did you deface me?
To split open the grave that covers your mother?
Why did you force me to disturb my mother's grave?
بئسماwretched is what بدَّلتَهاyou gave her instead فيin لحدِهاher burial niche
بئسما بدَّلتَها في لحدِها
بالذيin exchange for what رجَّتْهُshe hoped for it منfrom عائدتِكْyour kindness
بالذي رجَّتْهُ من عائدتِكْ
Wretched is what you have given her in her tomb
How wretchedly you changed her in her coffin
In place of the kindness she had hoped for from you.
To that which you hoped for from your returning.
إنif تكنyou have (auxiliary) ثبَّجتَyou garbled شعريmy verse ظالماًunjustly
إن تكن ثبَّجتَ شعري ظالماً
فرماكَthen may He strike you اللَّهُGod فيin واحدتِكyour sole remaining eye
فرماكَ اللَّهُ في واحدتِك
If you have unjustly garbled my verse,
If you found my poetry unjust,
Then may God strike you in your sole remaining eye
Then may God cast you into solitude.
بظلامٍwith darkness تُسلمyou surrender الكفَّthe hand لهbecause of it
بظلامٍ تُسلم الكفَّ له
أبدَforever الدهرِtime إلىto قائدتكyour female guide
أبدَ الدهرِ إلى قائدتك
With darkness that makes you surrender your hand
Into a darkness that hands themselves over to,
Forever to your female guide.
For eternity, to your leadership.
قدindeed رميناwe assailed ماwhat تبرّدْتَyou indulged in cold wit بهwith it
قد رمينا ما تبرّدْتَ به
بلظىwith blazing fire ذوَّبٍmelted منsome of جامدتكyour frozen verse
بلظى ذوَّبٍ من جامدتك
We have indeed assailed what you offered as cold wit
We have cast what you have cooled down with,
With a blaze that melted some of your frozen verse.
With the intense melting heat of your rigidity.
بدرتsprang forth بادرةٌan outburst منfrom شرريmy sparks
بدرت بادرةٌ من شرري
ألهبتْit kindled ناريmy fire فيwithin خامِدَتكyour extinguished fire
ألهبتْ ناري في خامِدَتك
An outburst sprang from my sparks
A spark burst forth from my embers,
That kindled my fire within your extinguished fire,
And lit my dormant fire in your frigidity.
بعدماafter أتْرزَfroze to death أرواحthe souls الورىmankind
بعدما أتْرزَ أرواح الورى
برْدُthe chill ماwhat لاقوهُthey encountered it منfrom واردتكyour offering
برْدُ ما لاقوهُ من واردتك
After the souls of mankind had been frozen to death
After the souls of all people took shelter,
By the chill of what they encountered from your offerings.
From the cold they met from your downpour.
فاستعاذواso they sought protection لكfor you منfrom بادرتيmy outburst
فاستعاذوا لك من بادرتي
واستعاذواand they sought refuge بيَin me منfrom باردَتِكyour cold wit
واستعاذوا بيَ من باردَتِك
So they sought protection for you from my outburst,
So they sought refuge for you from my sparks,
And sought refuge in me from your cold wit.
And sought refuge in me from your iciness.
