صَبْحةَ النَّوْرُوز في الأحدِ
غَلَّshackled عنكaway from you الصومُfasting كلَّevery يَدِhand
غَلَّ عنك الصومُ كلَّ يَدِ
O morning of Nowruz on Sunday,
The morning of Nowruz on Sunday
Fasting has shackled every hand, holding it back from you.
Fasting has been lifted from you completely
فصباحso the morning الفطرthe breaking of the fast موعدناour appointed time
فصباح الفطر موعدنا
بصَبوحٍwith a morning draught كاملcomplete العُدَدِthe trappings
بصَبوحٍ كامل العُدَدِ
So the morning of the fast-breaking feast is our appointed time,
So the breakfast of Eid is our appointment
With a morning draught complete in all its trappings:
With a morning of perfect company
منof كُميتdark-red اللونin color صافيةclear
من كُميت اللون صافية
ترتميthrows itself فيinto الكأسthe cup بالزَّبدِwith froth
ترتمي في الكأس بالزَّبدِ
Of clear wine, dark red in hue,
Of red wine, pure and clear
Tumbling into the cup with froth;
Sprinkling foam in the cup
فوقهاabove it مماfrom what تجيشُit seethes بهwith it
فوقها مما تجيشُ به
حَبَبbubbles كاللؤلؤlike pearls البَدَدِscattered
حَبَب كاللؤلؤ البَدَدِ
Above it, from its seething,
Above it from what boils with
Are bubbles like scattered pearls.
Seeds like shining pearls
خنْدريسaged wine عُتِّقتwas aged فغدتand so became
خنْدريس عُتِّقت فغدت
منone of بناتthe daughters الكرمthe vine والأبدِand eternity
من بنات الكرم والأبدِ
A vintage wine, aged until it became
A freed slave girl so she became
A daughter of the vine and eternity.
One of the daughters of generosity and eternity
رُوحspirit راحٍwine أوor حُشاشتُهاits remaining life
رُوح راحٍ أو حُشاشتُها
فهْيَfor it is أختthe sister of الروحthe soul فيin الجسدِthe body
فهْيَ أخت الروح في الجسدِ
The spirit of wine, or its last breath of life,
A departing soul or her awakening
For it is the soul's sister in the body.
She is the soul's sister in the body
صعبةunruly فيin الرأسthe head جامحةunbridled
صعبة في الرأس جامحة
سهلةeasy فيin كلevery مُزْدَردِthroat
سهلة في كل مُزْدَردِ
Unruly in the head, unbridled,
Difficult in the head, passionate
Yet smooth in every throat.
Easy in every flirt
وسماعand song صِيغَwas fashioned منfrom كَلِمٍwords
وسماع صِيغَ من كَلِمٍ
قيِّمupright ماnot فيهin it منany أوَدِcrookedness
قيِّم ما فيه من أوَدِ
And song fashioned from words,
And hearing composed words
Upright, with no crookedness in it;
Evaluating what's in it of love
صاغهfashioned it صَوَّاغُهits goldsmith صِيَغاًforms
صاغه صَوَّاغُه صِيَغاً
بِدَعاًnovel لمnot تُلقَbeen cast فيinto خَلَدِa mind
بِدَعاً لم تُلقَ في خَلَدِ
Its goldsmith fashioned it into forms
Its composer composed it
Novel, such as had never entered a mind.
With a prayer not cast in eternity
فلهso it has فيin عقلthe mind of سامعهits listener
فله في عقل سامعه
عملٌan effect كالنفثlike blowing فيupon العُقَدِknots
عملٌ كالنفث في العُقَدِ
Thus, in its listener's mind, it has
So it has in the mind of its listener
An effect like breath blown upon knots.
An effect like blowing on knots
منfrom ظباءgazelles غيرnot نافرةٍfleeing
من ظباء غير نافرةٍ
غايةٍsupreme فيin الحسنbeauty والغَيَدِand supple grace
غايةٍ في الحسن والغَيَدِ
From gazelles that do not shy away,
Of gazelles, not startled
Peerless in beauty and supple grace;
The utmost in beauty and swaying
رائماتٍfond mothers ماnot رَئمنَthey cherished سوىexcept
رائماتٍ ما رَئمنَ سوى
أدواتthe instruments اللهوof pleasure منas وَلَدِoffspring
أدوات اللهو من وَلَدِ
Fond mothers, who have cherished nothing but
Does, not bored except
The instruments of pleasure as offspring.
By the tools of play, of boys
وعليناand we owe إذsince قضىdecreed حَكَمٌan arbiter
وعلينا إذ قضى حَكَمٌ
أنthat سَبَقْتَyou preceded الفطرthe fast-breaking feast فيin الأمدِtime
أن سَبَقْتَ الفطر في الأمدِ
And we owe, since an arbiter decreed
And on us, when a judgment decreed
That you preceded the fast-breaking feast in time,
You preceded Eid in the term
ياذِجاراتٌcommemorative draughts سنشربهاwe shall drink them
ياذِجاراتٌ سنشربها
لكto you فيهduring it جمَّةُabundant العَدَدِin number
لك فيه جمَّةُ العَدَدِ
Commemorative draughts that we shall drink
O wines we will drink
To you at that feast, in great number;
For you in it a gathering of company
مُخْلِفِيproviding a substitute يومa day كيومكlike your day ماnot
مُخْلِفِي يوم كيومك ما
فيهin it منany بؤسmisery ولاnor نكدِdistress
فيه من بؤس ولا نكدِ
Providing a replacement day like yours, with no
Leaving a day like your day what's in it
Misery or distress in it;
Of misery and no toil
مُنشيءcreating النيروزNowruz ثانيةa second time
مُنشيء النيروز ثانية
لاnot ذَوِيbearers of إثمsin ولاnor فندِfolly
لا ذَوِي إثم ولا فندِ
Creating Nowruz a second time,
Repeating Nowruz again
Bearing neither sin nor folly;
No sinners nor deviants
مُعْمِليputting to use كأسa cup يطوفgoes around بهاwith it
مُعْمِلي كأس يطوف بها
غلمةboys كالأدْمlike white gazelles بالجَرَدَon bare ground
غلمة كالأدْم بالجَرَدَ
Putting a cup to use, carried around by
Making a cup circulate round which
Boys like white gazelles on the bare plain.
Boys like red smoke
ذاكthat أقصىthe utmost of جُهدِناour effort لكfor you إذsince
ذاك أقصى جُهدِنا لك إذ
فاتwas lost فيon النيروزNowruz كلall دَدِmerriment
فات في النيروز كل دَدِ
That is the utmost we can do for you, since
That is our utmost effort for you when
All merriment was lost on Nowruz.
In Nowruz every arm missed
فاعذريناso pardon us إنهindeed it is قدرٌfate
فاعذرينا إنه قدرٌ
ليسdoes not يعطيgive اليومَtoday حظَّthe share of غَدِtomorrow
ليس يعطي اليومَ حظَّ غَدِ
So pardon us: it is fate,
So excuse us, it's a destiny
Which does not grant today tomorrow's share.
Today does not give the share of tomorrow
