    O man noble in parentage,

Of a lineage that surpasses all other lineages,

May God preserve you as a supporting brother,

Defending my domain and coming to my aid,

Championing me at times, and at times bestowing gifts.

I have always chosen praises for you,

And filled gatherings with them throughout time,

As a reciter of the suras fills mosques.

And I seek his newly gained and long-held wealth,

With which my hand wards off hardships.

A protection that keeps you from turning hostile,

Or deeming those lofty virtues superfluous,

Obeying bread-and-broth stews in abandoning them,

When their varieties cover the tables,

    And deceptive, perishable robes,

And fair, budding-breasted girls, and full-breasted ones,

Who betray pledges and old ties,

Even when they don close-fitting garments for you,

Mimicking the neck-turned gazelles of the winding sands.

Beware—may God guide you—of becoming obstinate,

Lest error make you miss the paths of right guidance,

And injustice lead you into lions' dens.

Do not let oppression set traps for you,

So that you slight my letter when it arrives,

Or my words, threatening and promising.

Not everyone who encounters rising fortune,

And finds time becoming his helper,

And fortune securing plentiful riches for him,

Turns away from his brothers, offering no aid,

Nor answering their letters, but remaining stone-like,

As though competing with rocks in stoniness,

In silence and withholding, first and time again.

Son of Ali, a recompense lies waiting,

    And poetry crosses barren wastes,

At times, and at times reaches watering places,

And never ceases making for its destinations.

Then it finds tracks and hunted quarry,

    And loosens shackles and necklaces,

    And undoes blood-feuds and rancors.

Do not deliberately rouse one who has not roused you,

Nor stir the black snakes of his reproach.

Not by withholding your assistance from him,

But by despising a noble man in him,

Whose ambitions have conversed with the two Farqad stars,

    Whom Mercury reckons another Mercury,

In speech and power, going out and coming in.

    تلقى إليه العُضُل المقالدا

    You test him and find a thousand, yet see him as one;

Intractable problems yield their keys to him.

Long have I stood by forgiveness, though seated.

Answer my letter, withholding or giving:

You will find your brother excusing or praising.

And if you set out intent on discord with me,

Taking distant men as intimates instead of me,

And seek to gratify someone who envies me,

Deliberately doing what hurts me, not turning

Away from it out of regard for ancient obligations,

And do not think it grave that I spend the night resentful,

You will find me defending my ground, mustering forces,

With followers at times, and at times alone.

I am met like a falcon meeting little birds,

Fighting in defense of the preserve and pursuing,

Thrusting with spears, courageous, and fighting with swords.

My easy pace suffices against the determined, straining fighter,

Fighting openly at times, lying in ambush at others,

Like a fierce lion reared as a hunter.

I have always been formidable, plotting against the plotter,

And never fall prostrate before an enemy.

Nor have I drawn close to a friend who keeps his distance,

Ever, nor yielded my head to one who would lead me.

Nor have I worshipped enticing prospects.

Beware, beware of rousing me in anger,

Lest forbearance stray from the straight path,

And recklessness take the wayward road.

And know, though you are hard and defiant,

That the noble man guards against poems

When their necks go roaming far and wide,

Their like already adorned with deathless verses.

Suppose you are iron: beware the files.

And know that poetry does not perish,

But is immortal, if anything is immortal.

And there were oppressors who found their beds comfortable:

I frightened their worst tyrant, and he lay awake,

Grieving, finding no comfort in pillows.

I have told you the truth; make amends, rightly guided.

Let your absent self resemble your present self.

Do not spend the night asleep upon a brink,

Nor sleep heedless of one who lies awake over you,

Nor deny the kindness of one who honors you,

Nor leave a free, proud man nursing rancor,

    Grinding iron-sharp fangs.

    تَتْرك ضِراماً في القلوب خامدا

    Stock the watchposts with portions of wealth;

You will leave the fire in hearts extinguished.

Do not leave hearts as furnaces:

Seeds bring harvests in their wake.

As a scout, I have never lied to my people.

And know, whenever you appease me in noble rivalry,

Returning and renewing your kindness to me,

And show yourself wary of consequences,

That if you delay the promises you make me,

And summer kindles its fierce, scorching blaze,

The cloak will then arrive cold,

    Adding cold to winter's cold,

Not cool enough to quell a blazing heat,

    Nor delicious like refreshing draughts,

    But tasteless, like inert things,

    And worn-out, motionless remains,

A heavy, unwanted burden on the back.

I do not love paltry gifts,

    Nor seek unsaleable wares.

The wise course is to seek ways to turn aside

From delaying us—may you enjoy an easy life.

And let it reap you no resentments,

Nor let me find an unyielding strand in you.

I am not one who wears coarse striped cloaks.

I have thundered; draw forth my thundering modesty—

My gratitude—and do not call down thunderclaps

From me, nor summon raging quarrels.

Far be it from you to prize schemes

    For yourself, or choose stratagems,

Like a traitor snapping at dusky snakes.

Be a friend who keeps old bonds,

Whose absence does not betray his covenant partner.

Heed the appeal and the pleader,

And do not turn corrupt after being upright.

    فَمَلِّكِ المكارمَ القوائدا

    Go bidding in the market of high deeds;

Give noble virtues possession of the reins,

As you give freeborn women possession of slave girls.

Do not let one who hopes in you be made to struggle,

No, nor one who asks you be made to strive.

God has established firm foundations for you:

Let God find you only building

A true edifice that preserves its foundations.

Do not join in baseness with a wasted, base man,

Who spends the night coaxing himself to do good—

A soul that sees in opening its provision bags

An ordeal that drives sturdy young she-camels hard,

As though it were undertaking a dreadful burial alive

By a father who stirred the envious against her.

Had I thought my case needed an advocate

With you, I would have furnished a forearm for a hand.

But I did not fear vexations

From you; rather, I thought well of you, untroubled,

Defying suspicions and driving them away.

Family of Nawbakht, answer one seeking

Affection for you that has wandered away from him.

Was I not a helper and supporter to you,

A servant sufficient for you, and an eager attendant?

And you, son of Ali, made things easy for me,

In absence and in presence, showing me kindness,

    Holding shade that never shifts,

Making water flow that never dwindles.

    Keep your bond of affection with me, as I have known you;

May I always find you free of ill.

For my forbearance now sheathes my recklessness,

And has fortified the covenant with a lasting wall.

O forearm with which I bend other forearms,

    فلا تُبَهْرِجْ فتسوءُ الناقدا

    You were a gold coin that silenced the assayers;

Do not turn counterfeit and displease the assayer.

Fortunate is the hand with which you join in covenant,

As fortunate as a hand embracing secluded maidens

In a garden whose fruit sways,

Where you encounter no one to drive you away,

And see no adversary stubbornly opposed to it.
