O lord, ever have the branches

of your counsel had roots beneath them.

Can someone like Amr subject someone like me

to humiliation, while his days stretch on?

Can someone like Amr humiliate someone like me

deliberately, while no blades are drawn?

Will he not see your indignation on my behalf,

like a sword in which death roams?

O Amr, may the torrents sweep you away!

Woe and bereavement to your mother!

    Your face, Amr, is long,

and dogs' faces are long too.

So where is your shame? Tell me,

    O dog—though a dog does not speak.

And a dog is by nature aggressive,

and a dog is by nature thieving.

    يزولُ عنها ولا تزولُ

    All the dog's vile traits are in you;

it leaves them behind, but you do not.

Yet it has some good qualities

that God and the Messenger have kept from you.

    It growls, and it barks,

and its lot is abasement and obscurity.

    ففيك عن قدْره سُفولُ

    The dog is loyal, while you are treacherous;

so you are beneath it in rank.

And it sometimes defends the livestock,

while you neither defend nor attack.

And you belong to a wicked household,

whose story is a long one.

Their faces are warnings to humankind,

but the backs of their necks are drums.

We ask God's forgiveness: we have done

    what a foolish ignoramus does.

We did not ask you for what we sought

except as one questions deserted ruins.

    Silence and disgrace: no speech,

    no letter, and no messenger.

If you are truly one of the boon companions,

then a ghoul is among the companions of kings.

A long face, its mouth drooling—

a pissing cunt is prettier than it.

Rather, you have a tunnel and a long snout,

and bastards have always been like this.

If, then, the equipment of boon companions is

these two things, as reason sees it:

    long snouts on faces

    whose gaping mouths inspire terror,

then the masters of boon companions are none

    but drains and elephants.

A chief who sees you for a day

is surely patient with torment and long-suffering.

No one has tired of me who could show patience

with you; rather, it is my fortune that tires easily.

    Mustafʿilun, fāʿilun, faʿūlun.

    Mustafʿilun, fāʿilun, faʿūlun.

A verse like your significance: it contains no

meaning, save that it is superfluous.
