ياO ثلجice ماءٍwater مالحsalty آسنٍstagnant and fetid
يا ثلج ماءٍ مالح آسنٍ
فاضoverflowed منfrom الحمَّامthe bathhouse فيinto الجيَّهْthe stagnant pool
فاض من الحمَّام في الجيَّهْ
O ice of salty, stagnant water,
O sweet salty ice water
that overflowed from the bathhouse into the stagnant pool,
Overflowing from the fountain into the valley
فليسso it is not بالمشروبِdrinkable منbecause of خُبْثِهِits foulness
فليس بالمشروبِ من خُبْثِهِ
ولاnor مُعَدٌّprepared لرصاصِيَّهْfor a leaden vessel
ولا مُعَدٌّ لرصاصِيَّهْ
so foul it cannot be drunk,
There is no harm in its drink
nor is it prepared for a leaden vessel.
Nor bullets ready in its pouch
إذاwhen أجابتْanswered شنطفٌShantaf طَبْلَهاher drum
إذا أجابتْ شنطفٌ طَبْلَها
ناحَwailed عليهover it نوحَthe lament of مَعْنيَّهْan anguished woman
ناحَ عليه نوحَ مَعْنيَّهْ
When Shantaf answers her drum,
When the tambourine answers its rhythm
a wail rises over it like an anguished woman's lament,
It sighs melodiously
منfrom نَغْمةٍa note تَضْرطfarts noisily فيin حلقِهاher throat
من نَغْمةٍ تَضْرط في حلقِها
ونكهةٍand breath تفسُوfarts silently كُرُنْبيَّهْcabbage-like
ونكهةٍ تفسُو كُرُنْبيَّهْ
from a note that farts in her throat,
With a tune that gargles in its throat
and cabbage-reeking breath that farts silently.
And a taste that spoils its carob
طيزٌan arse رحيبٌcapacious وفمٌand a mouth مثلُهlike it
طيزٌ رحيبٌ وفمٌ مثلُه
مُسْتَرقٌstolen منfrom وجهِthe face of جَريهْa catfish
مُسْتَرقٌ من وجهِ جَريهْ
A capacious arse and a mouth like it,
A wide butt and mouth like it
stolen from the face of a catfish.
