O Ibn Dawud, O jurist of Iraq,
O son of David, O jurist of Iraq
Give us a ruling on those whose eyes slay:
Answer us about the dark-eyed gazelles
هلis/are? عليهنَّupon them فيfor الجروحthe wounds قصاصٌretaliation in kind
هل عليهنَّ في الجروح قصاصٌ
أمor مباحٌlawful لهاfor her/it دمblood العشاقِthe lovers
أم مباحٌ لها دم العشاقِ
Are they liable to retaliation for the wounds,
Do they owe blood-price for their wounds
or is lovers' blood lawful for them?
Or is lovers' blood lawful for them to take
